looks like rl25 is most popular powder?

Hey guys, I've got brass , bullets (168 vlds) now I need powder. I've got some IMR 4831 but checking my old book it does not show that powder as a suggestion. Looking at the reloading forum the most popular powder seems to be rl25 with somewhere around 79-82 grains being in the final cut-off point. Ya'll have need doing this longer than I so I'm asking , is this where you would start from scratch? And what about primers--I've got some CCI magnum primers from years ago , I was going to start with those unless they are not recommended , Thanks, Mike

Mike, I would add what rifle caliber you are working with. Would not want to assume it a 7 REM Mag if it was 280 , 7 STW , RUM or something else. I see this is under the STW forum but it never hurts to make sure we are all on the same page

Yes ,I have a Rem 7mm STW Sendaro. I have been told it has 1:9.25 twist, all factory. Recently gotten interested in some long range shooting so I am attempting to convert my 140 grain factory hunting rounds to some 168 vld long range hunting and target rounds. Trying to save time and money ( short on both ) and my wife says that until she gets her vacation no more guns! So I'm tring to convert my old standby and get back into reloading, Thanks, Mike

I have used H-1000 with 180's in the STW and H1000 with 168's in the 7mm REM. I think it is a good powder if you can find some.

Well , now I'm torn, my Nosler Book does show H1000 and it also is their most accurate powder they tested. I guess you can't argue with success, any recommendations on locating some? Do ya'll like magnum primers?

While I 4831 isn't the best powder for the stw, it will do for moderate loads with mid weight bullets. I've used 4831 (forget which one- it was years ago) with fireforming loads in my old stw and they drove tacks, but my pops rifle hated them. Much better to go to rl22, rl25, h1000, retumbo, rl50, etc. depending on bullet weight. I'd not go to the bmg offerings unless you want to push a 175-180 grain pill.
Yes on mag. primers also.

It's nearly as easy to find as free ranging Pink Unicorns.

Great powder though.
I gave some away (h1000) this last year because I didn't feel like playing with it again after getting out of it over ten years ago. Gave it to family to play with... I've already got every rl but 10 and a few hodgdon/Imr choices plus mil surp and other stuff. I don't need another powder on the shelf.

Well...If you feel like giving away any Varget or 7828 SSC I'll take that off your hands. I'll even compensate for hazmat fees and shipping charges. :D

Gave away H-1000??? I have never wanted my family to like me that much...:D

Actually we found some a while back at a Walmart no less. Same lot and bought all 11 lbs. Yeah I know, I am a hog. But I will shoot it up pretty darn quickly.

I drive tacks with 81grs IMR 7828, fed 215 primers, 140gr CT Ballistic Silvertips,,,tried shooting 140gr Berger VLD best group was 3 1/2" at 100yds. Did not try any other powder, figured shooting fingernail holes at 100 yds no reason to change.
