I'm having difficulty deciding between the 300 norma or the 338 edge for my next longrange rifle. With this comes the question of which action to use. I have been having trouble finding information on the 300 norma. I have only read one article on the round and it peaked my interest. Any information and advice would be helpful. Thank you

Norma would be my choice. My buddy had one built this year and it's a great gun.
He went with a rem700 action and a Lila 26 1-10. His gun shoots great!!
With 91gr of Re33 and a 210LRAB sailing at 2980fps, it works really good.
His only regret is not ordering a 28" barrel. It wld be well worth the extra $$$ and wait..
Both are great rifles, Norma's are a little more efficient cartridge.
Good luck.

In the upper right of this forum is a search function, use it,will have lots of good info.If you are considering edge you should also include 338 Norma in your search, along with 338 lapua,or 338 RUM,there all in same type performance level. Then there are also the improved type 338 LAI,338 AX,the list goes on with the 338's.Im bias toward 338 for energy at 1000+

I have just got my fireform gun done in what we are calling 300 FOG. It is an improved 300 norma, and I have made 80 pieces of brass so far. I use 338 norma since this way my false shoulder is all ready there to headspace from. Ever since Shawn showed me a 338 norma case, I wanted a 30 for the big bergers.

So far the fireforming load has shot a .115 and a .225, this is with 220 scenars @ 2943. I couldn't help myself, so I made up a ladder with 5 brass. 230 hybrid targets ahead of 96,97,98,99, and 100 grs of 33... I hit pressure at 100 by feel AND measurement of the head. My workable velocity will be about 3,160 and down, the top load (too much) went through the ohler at 3,205. Looks like my 338 LIMP might just be a shelf piece!

Going next weekend to get the real ones, sister rifles for my buddy and I.

What is the gun going to be used for. Paper is a lot different than a animal. The edge is a pretty good cartridge. But if the norma is only doing 2980 fps area I would say you should go with the 300 ultra or there would be nothing wrong with the 300 win. I have seen them do 2875-2925fps with the 215 berger. And that was not using reloader 33. I would just need more info to say what would be the best.

If past a mile 338, the energy the 300 grain bullets carry is not recoverable from a 30.

According to some on here, if you just add a wyatts box to your 7, it out to out pound a 30 all day. Boy was I sorry I searched for 7 rem mag data!

I was in the same boat as you.

My first choice is 338 Lapua Mag Imp. however you will need a reamer to drill a bit further if you plan to use 300gr Berger.
That's when 300 or 338 Norma Mag comes in. The brass is a bit shorter and you can extend the bullet further. You can use in magnum action however the bolt head has to be .588" compared to 338Edge or RUM; .535"

Need more HP in Norma Mag?
300 HULK (shoulder lift and less taper)

I have a 300 Norma with a 28" barrel. It shoots 208 A-MAX's at 3108 fps. I would think it would do the same with the 210 NLRAB. I used a REM 700 action. The good thing about the Normas is no worries about OAL or mag length issues. For a hunting rifle I would go with a 26" bbl in 300 and 25" with a 338.

What does he need a wyatts box for? I have not seen the seven energy wise beat on the big 300's. And there is something about the .30 cals on up they hit hard all the time. I will say the 7 are more pleasant to shoot and have high b.c bullets. But just because gunwerks compares the 168 berger to the 30-378 with a 165 partition does not mean anything to me. If a guy compares the 7mm with a 180 hybrid at .675 bc and the 215 berger with a .696 and both doing 3000fps with same conditions things change. Then you can take the winner of the two and up the velocity and compare to the 338 300 grain berger at 2850 fps and decide what you want or need. I would say there are a boat load of calibers that work to the 1000 yards but after that with elk in the equation the 338 wins all day long and only gets better when you get further out.

I would get the 300 Norma. Shoot the 208 to 240 grain bullets. The reason is faster flatter and more margin for error on distances your shooting. I do not have a 338 edge but I do have a 338 Laupa Improved and a 300 Norma improved. I have taken elk with the 338 Laupa at 1103 yards and taken Elk with the 300 Norma 1342 yards 1246 1090 with no issues. The 300 Norma is flatter and faster all the way to a mile with plenty of energy to kill. If you only want to shoot 1000yd get the Norma less recoil you can spot your hits. Huge range of bullets to choose from. If you ever wanted to shoot varmints you have bullet choices from 100 grains all the way to 240

I'm right with you. I was poking fun about a thread I happened to run upon.

He was being Sarcastic, and if you really amp up the 300's with the large pills in a improved version they keep up with the 338 in the 1000-1400 type range.Tom punches 2000 Yrds with his 338 LAI,65# rig. Sorry slow on keyboard, hunt the distance
