I'll be working in the Swan Valley area for awhile. I'd love to tag an Idaho wolf to go with my Montana one. Do I have to buy the hunting license in order to purchase a wolf tag? I'd buy the NR tag in a heartbeat, but not sure I want to spend the additional cash if the hunting licese is required first. Thanks, mtmuley

I'm "fairly" sure that being classified as a big game animal a NR license is necessary.
It may well be that a license is necessary to hunt anything in this state.
However, I may have a "work around."
Depends on how long "awhile" is and how persnickety you are.

I was informed by a timber cop that shooting squirrels was considered hunting therefore requiring a hunting license. I imagine they'll get you for shooting in the woods with no hunting license. If you're wanting a legal wolf you'll need one.

Sounds like you boys are cooking up a scheme to buy a resident license based on being here in Idaho for "a while". As someone in a field very close to law enforcement in this state, my advice is simple...DON'T DO IT.
Idaho fish and Game is nothing about the fish and game and everything about the money. Their computer systems are tied to computer systems in virtually every other state. They know where you hold a driver's license, register to vote, own property, and file state income taxes as a resident, just to name a few. There is a high likelihood that you will get caught. And any wolf illegally taken and transported across state lines become a federal felony Lacey Act violation, which means you can kiss your right to own guns goodbye forever, as a couple guys in my town recently learned the hard way.
Pony up for the non resident license and tag, or wait until the wolves invade your home state to shoot one.
