I have been searching for a newer truck for quite some time now and have finally found one I would be happy with. I started out being hell bent on a diesel in either a GM or a Ram but the more I investigated Dodge the more problems I found them to be "notorious" for so I chopped them from my list. I found a 2500HD with the 6.0 that I really like. Just wondering what everyone thinks of them. Reviews online are mostly city folk so I think I will find people here with driving style/terrain more similar to mine. I read a lot of people get around 12 city driving and anywhere from 15-18 highway. Seems a little high to me. So what are you guys getting and how do you like the truck overall?

Depends on the transmission, mine has the 4 speed. I have an 04 and it's gets 11 mpg that's it. If I have on the gooseneck trailer with two animals we get 5 mpg on hills and maybe 9 on the highway. If you can get the newer transmission you might get what your talking about. I would never have gotten this motor it was the wife's choice I wanted a diesel and I am actively trying to get her to sell the thing right now.

If you end up with the truck look at Black bear running they can help a little.

I have an 05 3/4 ton 6.0 liter with 4:10 gears. It pulls pretty well but the mileage isn't great. I get 11-12 empty around town. At 50 MPH i can get close to 15 mph, 60 MPH is about 13-14 MPG. At 75 I am back to 11-12. Pulling, it varies, up hill is awful maybe 6-7 MPG, down hill is about 9 MPG. It has been a really good truck as far as how it has held up.

I think you are on the right track regarding the diesels. There are only a handful of engines that have a good track record and the year matters as well. Considering the additional expenses involved in every aspect of a diesel, a guy better be pulling most of the time to make it worth it.

I think the 1/2 ton models and some of the 2/4 tons have the higher gears in the tranny and a guy may get close to the numbers you are stating. Pulling power is drastically changed though at least when you are pulling heavy loads up hills.

Pulling really isnt a concern at the moment as I only have an atv trailer and it weighs next to nothing. but I just want something that is capable if I happen to purchase a little camper or something or need to tow a vehicle which i do from time to time. Sounds like itll probably fit the bill pretty well. I mostly drive a mile to work or go hunting... to be honest a half ton would fit the bill fine for the most part but I really prefer the 3/4 and 1 ton

I have an 03' 2500 and I got 14 highway, replaced front wheel bearings and got 18 on one trip but I haven't tracked it since. It's a good truck but I wish I had a Duramax and Allison, my buddy has an 02 2500 Duramax and he reluctantly took it hunting, we chained up all 4 and went for it and he idled every where we wanted to go with ease compared to my truck and he used half the fuel, found out it has a locker in the rear which is like having a rocket booster when it locks up with chains on :D

My brother in law has a 2011( i think) and it pulls good and hasnt gave any problems (40,000 miles +/-) but it really gets bad fuel mileage. My buddy has a 2 duramax's and they pull good (65,000) also but they still get bad fuel mileage. My dad has a "92 Dodge cummins and it does everything its asked and gets great fuel mileage. But its UGLY! I personally like the old school 350, its a jack of all trades but master of none.

One of the field svc trucks I used to run was a 1-ton regular cab dually with the 6.0 & 5-speed IIRC. Service bed with a Lincoln 300G tooled up, somewhere in the 14k pound range I think. Way too much weight for that rig but it did it.

They do seem to be pretty dern reliable though, if you can stomach the shoddy mileage. I have to say diesel all the way but, i'm biased.

For what you're looking to do, it should be just fine.

I was looking for a Diesel but this poor white trash cant afford the price tag on one with low enough miles to suit me.

Late 07 then, it should have the 2nd gen 6.0. My pops has an 08 that I think he said he gets 18 on the hiway and 15 running to and around town. I know he's never wanted for more power, I was looking at a Duramax till I used his truck hauling horses a while back. I decided the extra cost and maintenance was more than I'd care for given the performance of the 6.0. wouldn't want a truck payment to get in the way of new gun. :D

its a 2007 with the 6 speed tranny

The 6.0 will get you about 18mpg on the highway at 70mph with the air turned on. My brother inlaw had one for several years and saw about 15mpg towing a trailer. Yet a lot of gas mileage is how the end user drives. Your in the hill country and the mileage drops, but your in the flat lands and the mileage increases. My next door neighbor had a Yukon with that engine and claimed twenty on the highway!

I had a 6400lb. half ton with the 5.3 engine, and it got about 19.5 on the highway. Had I added a camper shell like my brother inlaw, it would pick up another two mpg.

forgot to tell you to use Texaco or BP gas in it!!! The computers are programed for these fuels and you'll often see 2 to 3 mpg increase in fuel mileage. My truck really noticed this. Fords and Dodges are similar as well. Cheap gas screws with all the sensors, and when they go bad the fuel injection system runs wide open
