Which scope would perform the best on a .300 Win Mag for shots out west 600 yards and under- Nightforce 3.5-15X50 or the Nightforce NXS Compact 2.5-10x42?

For me, there would be two questions to answer:

#1. Does the size and weight of the 3.5-15x50 matter to me vs the compact?

#2. Do I get any practical utility out of a 2.5x bottom end relative to a 3.5x bottom end?

If the answer to both is "no" go with the higher mag scope. You can turn it down to 10x if you prefer. You can't turn the 10x up to 15....

Good point.

Looks like you are the only one interested in my threads. :D

Thanks for the reply!

Naw, just a deadbeat with nothing better to do!! :D. Wait until hunting season is over and you'll get a lot more replies. I am just blessed with the gift of corporate travel and that keeps me out of the woods and on this site

Glad to have you around! Can't go wrong with a NF!

If 600 yds is the max or mighty close to it...there cant be anymore than 10-12 brands that will do as good or better ( remember the distance) for LOTS LESS $$$$

Maybe. But IMO the Nightforce has so many nice extras that the price doesn't bother me.

The closest scope I considered was the Leupold VX-6 but the NF's Zero stops and turrets are just worlds above anything else I've tried.

I've had both scopes on my 338wm which I regularly shoot to 500 yards. They are both excellent scopes and you can't go wrong either way.

A few of things to consider:

  1. Is this a hunting rig that you are going to carry? If it is I would strongly recommend the 2.5-10x42. The 3.5-15x50 while a wonderful scope is heavy (2lbs) and bulky. I do carry mine a lot and I found the bulkiness an issue.
  2. Is this going to be a bench/stand rifle? If yes then get the 3.5-15. The low light capability of the 50mm bell is very good. There is a huge difference between this scope and the garden variety scopes.
  3. I did not find the magnification difference between the two when shooting to 500 yards significant.

The compact's lack of parallax adjustment would be the deciding factor for me. If you are an experienced shooter and understand the need for a consistent cheek weld I would go with the compact.

I hear they are coming out with a new compact with a parallax adjustment, they may already be available. I am going to be doing a lot of scope swapping soon.

The 2.5-10x42 has parallax so that isn't an issue. It also has the upgraded illumination which is fantastic. This power level is more than enough for any big game hunting to 1/2 a mile. The reduced weight and better features compared to the 3-15 would make up my mind.

And I would agree, if you can afford it go with NF. No other scope at that price point has the ruggedness and durability reputation. That's a big deal in my mind!
