Dad just bought a factory pre 64 7MM STW 26 in barrel lazer ported, I don't know why any one would port a stw.

I load for two other STW's now, mine and my brothers, this Winchester is kicking my butt, I have four loads that the two Remingtons will make one hole groups with.

can any one tell me what the major differences are between the two are? found out that one being mag box is shorter in the model 70 compared to the 700's

Did Winchester free bore there barrels?

currently using all Nosler bullets and Hodgdons 4831 which both the Remingtons shoot very well.

Last I knew, Weatherby was the only company freeboring any and all caliber chambered in their rifles...

that is what I thought as well but heck thought this would be the place to get an answer to be sure.

this is the first STW that has not like my current pet loads. so I am looking into everything I can.

Going out to shoot again this evening working on getting a load worked up before deer season 1 to 1.5 inch groups don't cut it.

Is your rifle a ss with the tuppereware stock?? If so, ditch the tupperware and she may just start shooting..... Get a good laminate or syn. stock stiff enough for a bigger round.

Please clarify exactly what model you have. Is it a "classic", or a Sharpshooter"?

Should be stamped on the barrel.

There were three different variants on the Sharphooters as well.

Mine shoots the hell out of the 160gr Accubonds and 154gr Hornady Interbonds and was nearly as good with the few loads I tried with Swift Sirocco's bu I didn't spend any time fine tuning.

Measure to the first port hole and figure your bbl length to that point as though it was in fact cut off there.

Having the shorter barrel you may need to try working with a faster powder than you are used to.

it is the 90's Classic version of the pre 64 action came with the factory walnut stalk, I worked over the trigger this weekend, barrel length is 26 inches, if I cut the ports off it would make it a 24 in barrel.

need to bed the action but not sure that is going to get done before deer season. it has one hump about 2 inches back on the fore arm that could use a little sanding.

went and bought a new scope for it this weekend, dad bought the NF 3.5X15x50 we can now eliminate optics as the problem. Just need to find bases cabelas was all out of pre 64 bases.

the pre 64 bases have a rear .435 screw spacing, unless I can fins a one piece base in town today.

over all I think the rifle will be every thing that dad ever needs it to be and be a solid 600-700 yard shooter with just a few changes.

switching stalks might cause Dad to have a heart attack he is hind old school and love wood stalks.

I will keep you all posted this week as things come together.

working up loads with 140 accubond and CT bullets over 4831 and work with some 7828.

If you haven't done it yet switch bullets to sierra or hornady for a spell and see if she settles down. I've seen (and have) rifles that don't like nosler pills but will shoot either sierra or hornady. The reverse is also true.

thanks for the advice lefty, I have been using sierra 140 BT's for getting on paper if they shoot well I don't have a problem using them, I don't have any Hornady bullets except for some old 175 round nose.

but I will try some others.

Also, give the Berger hybrids a try...Never know, it might like them.

the bergers are so long trying to seat them in the mag might be a challenge. I still have some of the first barnes 150's I will give them a shot as well.

worked on the stalk a little last night getting the hump sanded out and getting the barrel free floated.

just waiting on the rings and bases to get here. its going to be down to the wire. deer season here opens the 9 November
