Hey all,

Starting a custom gun build and trying to decide on the caliber. I want an all purpose rifle. Looking at a 300 Jarrett or some other hot 7mm. Needs to be able to take out an Elk. Want range out to 1000 yards. What are your suggestions. Don't want more recoil than a 300 Jarrett puts out.

I ran a 300stw for many years, about 4 different barrels same caliber, 200gr accubonds over 3100fps, killed 11 elk lots of smaller stuff, that would be my vote of the 2,,,,

300 Dakota or...

Neck down some 8x68S, decrease the taper and blow the shoulder up to 35 or 40 degrees.

If you want a long range elk hammer, then recoil goes with the package. If you don't like recoil then get it braked.

I know that the 300 RUM will do the job and recoil can be delt with with a good brake.

Also the 338RUM or Edge.

1000 yards is a streach for the 7mm s (They will do it but not with the athority of the 30s).

There are lots of good muzzle brakes available that will tame the big 30s. I have achieved 70%
recoil reduction on my 300 RUM by tuning the brake to the load.

Actual recoil of the 11.5 lb rifle is 10.2 ft/lbs of recoil. (Less than a .243) so I would recomend something that would consistantly bring down an elk at 1000 yards.

Just my opinion

Hey JE how do you tune your brake and what break do you use. I thought I saw in some ballistics that a 7mm of the same weight as a .30 will have more energy than the .30 the farther out you go. I guess it's a BC thing.

That is a myth. You hear it a lot but no one ever produces any actual load data to back it up. If you mean same bullet weight, the 30 will have a lower BC but it will send it faster, the 7 will eventually catch up at some point but that point will likely be beyond the effective range of the bullets.

If you use a heavy for cal high BC bullet in the 7, then why not in the 30? To compare for instance, a 7 RM vs a 300 WM, the 7 will shoot a 180 gr bullet at about the same velocity that a 300 WM will shoot a 215 gr bullet with a slightly higher BC. The 300 WM will have a significantly higher down range affect.

When it comes to the 300 RUM, the 7 is not even close.

I really like that one! :D Couldn't have said it in a better way.
That sounds like the one I designed a while back...

The brake is mine (The Assassin) and I have a formula that gives me the volume required for each
chamber based on the volume of gas, bullet weight, velocity and rifle weight. It is different on every
cartridge / load combination.

I finally received the patent for the brake and the tuning process but I am still not willing to give up
to much information. (There is always someone that will copy a good design).

Most brakes will have between 40% and 50% recoil reduction (That is quite a bit if you think about it)
but I wanted more so I designed the Assassin brake with some out of the box thinking and some tricky machining

It will normally produce between 55 and 60 % and with tuning it has exceeded 70% and for hard kicking rifles, tuning is a plus and can make the rifle very tame.

I will have the YOU TUBE video finished buy next week showing the 300 rum test that proves an honest 70 %.

If you have not seen the other videos log on to YOU TUBE and do a search for jecustom101 and there are 4 videos for now.

7mm STW or 300wm will take care of your needs quite well.

You have higher BC bullets with any of the 30 cal's but to 1000yds it's not that big of a difference.

The problem with the STW is that once you get one shooting right it's hard to pick up anything else.gun)

This is true...I've had mine for 11 years now, and I will ALWAYS have an STW in my stable from now on.

Also be careful shooting the 7mm calibers, they tend to be addictive.
