Im getting back into reloading the .308 bolt gun and am curious what is the preferred brass to use. I have a bunch of new old ( 1990 or so) made winchester brass from midway. And a bunch of L.C. brass bought years ago. It is going into factory chambers Win. Mod. 70 and savage 10FP i will do all the prep. ( shorting by weight, flash hole stuff, trimming) but want to know from an accuracy stand point what is the hot ticket going now? gonna load bergers and sierra MK 168s any imput would help. thanks..

I load nothing but Sierra and I get them from Sierra direct. In order of revelance on brass (at least my revelance), Lapua, Lake City and everything else.

I load a boatload of 308 caliber for bolt guns. Just finished loading 2500, all in Lake City 12 OFMB from Wideners. 2140 165 HPBT- 2200 168 HPBT - 2120 125 SPT H380 (about 20 pounds give or take) across the board 210M federal primers.

That will last maybe 6 months.

X2

I have switched to lapua I have them on 7th reloading still look and load like new primer pockets still firm when seating primers :D

I wouldn't be too concerned with the pockets but with the necks depending on your sizing regimen. Brass is brass for the most part and all brass workhardens. 7 times is a bit much without annealing.

Because 308 brass is pretty easy to obtain and inexpensive, we toss 'em (scrap yard) after 3 times.

You're "getting back" into reloading and ask that question? Accuracy can't be bought. Unless your rig, shooting skills, reloading skills and load development skills are very good the brand of you cases you use won't mean much. If anything.

Forget the costly brands and get what ever brass is easy to find, then just do some loading and shooting for a while.

you are so very right!!! i used to shoot every weekend till the closest rang closed. kids started getting bigger .and took on a part time business. now kids can go shoot with me and no more business. the price on the "old new " can of IMR 4064 i took out today to load with said $17.95 on the price tag. i have boxes of bullet heads that say $14.95 for a hundred.so yea. A little hint... Whatever extruded powder you have, if it's older, take the lid off and have a good sniff. If it has a vinegar like smell, it's good. If it has no smell and it's clumpy, toss it.

The exception to that would be Unique (in smokless and Go-Ex in black). Everything else shoud smell... No smell, no good.
