im a 264 win mag fan and have 3 of them but looking for ideas on another rifle or maybe im looking for a unicorn I havnt decided. heres what im wanting to do and maybe some of you more knowledgeable folk can help me.
im looking for a parent case that can push a 6.5mm bullets 130-140gr at 3200+ fps accurately while not being extremely overbore, not labor intensive with brass sizing and resizing and horribly expensive. 24-26" barrel that weights in at no more than 9.5 lbs scoped. what components would YOU choose?

You have just described the 264 Win mag. :D Why try to go around your thumb to get to your elbow?

I think for the sake of something different the wsm necked to 6.5 would be in the right place for you.

Steve

What about a 6.5 Rem mag, it was one if not the first SA mags.
In a 24" barrel with todays powders I bet you could have your cake and eat it to...

Go for the 6,5x68! A fantastic round with an overwhelming performance that already exists. Brass is directly available from RWS. On the other hand, you can neck down 8 x68S brass from either Norma or RWS. gun)

The 6.5 Sherman is the perfect fit, very easy to form brass by sizing down then fire forming a 270 Win case. Very good chambering right in the performance level your looking for!!

Are you wanting something bigger than a 264 Win Mag?

6.5 Sherman FTW! I want to build a barrel for my 700 Sendero "SB" project.

The 6.5 SS (Sherman Short) is also appearing to be coming along nicely as an excellent round.

I had a feeling I was doing that but wasn't sure if there was something out there that could outdo it. of the 3 rifles I have chambered in 264 only 1 reaches the true potential of the round and its quite heavy and cumbersome to pack around. so in all honesty I was just trying to find a way to spend a bunch of money. I have heard some good things about G.A Precisions new 6.5 round

I'm telling you, if you want something fast, conservative on powder, and unique, contact Rich Sherman (Elkaholic) and get some more info on the 6.5 Sherman.

It takes alot for me to be impressed by a round, and from what all I've seen and read about it on here, I am very impressed.

Take the 7 Dakota (or 7 LRM) and neck it down. It is a bit overbore but you don't have to load it to max. Get some slow powder like RL33 or RL50 and shoot the 160's in it with a moderate charge, or zip the 140's down range at 3400 +, maybe 3500, maybe 3600 with RL33.

That said, I believe Gunwerks is working on a 6.5 LRM which is a smaller cased 7 LRM necked down. Might be right up your alley.

The WSM and Sherman are good choices but nothing different than the 264 WM in performance. In fact the WM has a bit more capacity, but they will give you 3200 fps with a 140.

I think that the 6.5 SIN is a 7mm Dakota necked down. He is getting some incredible velocities out of it.... Like 3500 FPS w/ a 160 gr bullet. SIN arms in SD. There is a thread about it. Looks like he will start taking orders around Thanksgiving. Bruce

You're correct the 6.5 Sin is based off the 7 Dakota case, but it's an improved version and the OP was looking for minimal case forming. Just necking down a 7 Dakota is a simple task no different than just sizing it.

I didn't realize the 6.5 Sin velocities were so high.

Anyway, a straight neck down would be easy and provide some good velocities at moderate pressures.

Or... it might be more cost effective to order a chambered barrel in 6.5 Sin or even full out rifle from Sin Arms
