.284 win reloader 17 140 grn Berger load data?

I am looking to see if anyone has loading data for .284 win using 140 grn berger vlds using rl17.

Sorry if this answer is another post. I could not find anything when i searched.
 
Back to loading. Generally RL-17 loads should mirror H4350 or IMR 4350 load data. RL-17 will surpass either in velocity with same charge weights.

I'd suggest you start with RL-17 around 54 gr and work up to what your rifle likes without any pressure issues. I'd guess you will most likely end up around 56 or 57 grs.

I was going to respond earlier but didn't figure my data would be that useful, here is why:

I have a 23" barrel with over 1500 rounds through it. The worn throat, moly coated bulllets and an OAL of 3.080" will most likely have my loads unsafe in your 284. I'll share some loads that I developed in the last few years.

139 SST 59.5 was most accurate @ 3258 fps
140 accubond 59.5 gr was most accurate @ 3240 fps
162 A-max 57 gr most accurate @ 3055 fps
168 Berger classic 56.5 gr most accurate @ 3030 fps

When Bob Hutton worked with this case back in 1963 he came up with a standard with a 140 partition.
57 or 58 gr of IMR 4350 for velocity right around 3000 fps.

When my 284 didn't have the longer OAL and I was using 140 sierras thirty years ago I also used that same formula.

When H4350 came out switched as it is an extreme powder and fits better.

Then moly came on the scene. I use Rem takeoffs and it helped deal with the fouling that those factory barrels tend to have compared to custom barrels. This barrel is pretty much shot out. Next barrel with have a custom reamer to my specs and I'll use dynatec borekote.

I agree with AZShooter on the load. Of course, start lower and work up.

I've come to really like R-17. Finding load data is difficult. Comparative loads with H4350/IMR4350 and Quickload is how I get started.

Right now i am using rl19 with good results but i have been hearing so many good things about rl17 and would like to try it.

California law prevents you from posting unpublished loads???
 
It did not copy over very well but here is the loading data i got from berger for 140 grain VLDs in the .284 win. As you can see the start load for H4350 is 46.5 and the max is 51.8 and the starting load for IMR 4350 is 46.0 and max load is 51.0.

So my question is AZ shooter should mirror this load or the load that you recommended? I do understand that your rifle may be different etc than mine. 300 rounds vs 1500.

I also have found that this rifle and others can shoot higher powder charges than what Berger specifies. i always start lower middle and work my way up.

I guess my question is should i mirror these lower charges or go with the higher charges as posted? I am leaning towards the lower charges obviously see where they are at for pressure signs and FPS.

I guess i just wanted to put this out there to see what the response is. I am new to messing around with "unpublished" loading data and want to make sure i do it correctly...or as correctly as can be for this sort of thing.

RL17 is very close to H4350 in burn rate. I have found this to be true in the 300 WSM, & RM and 25-06. I think you would be safe to start with the H4350 starting load. if you wanted to be more on the safe side, you could go a grain or 2 lower. I have found Berger reloading data to be very conservative. When I am sailing uncharted waters, I pick a conservative starting load and work up until I see signs of pressure, then I back off.
 
I have Berger's book and it is the most conservative book I own. You won't hurt anything starting with Berger's suggested starting load. BUT your idea is better and faster to start lower middle as you usually do and work up.

Never mentioned it but I use 284 win brass and Fed 210 match primers.
