How do you feel about Hunting Mule Deer under these circumstances:

  1. You finally pulled your rifle out of the closet a week and a half before season opener to see how it shoots.
  2. You load up some rounds using somewhat consistent loads but you are in a hurry so you don't let the scale settle..."its close enough".
  3. bullet weight? whatever is in that box... Velocity/drop? see next.
  4. You shoot a steel plate out at about 120 and you are hitting it fairly consistently.
  5. Don't want to practice too much ... wouldn't want to have to load more rounds before deer season.
  6. Eating Granola bars is best done once you hike in ... Its still dark anyway.

Please Advise.

I think if you wait till your 100% ready, you'll never do anything. I think your flying by the seat of your pants a little but your chances are a lot better than sitting at home wringing your hands.

No, based off of the fairly consistent hits on a 120 yard steel plate. This is a long range forum and anything less 100% hits on a 120 yard plate (assuming it is the standard 6 inch diameter plate) is not good enough for a clean shot on an animal. IMHO....

Also, I would not consider taking them because who eats granola bars? :D

I would absolutely not take this person hunting with me... I hate chasing my own game I shoot let along some else because they can't take the time to get a rifle shooting well... Well meaning at least hitting a 6" target consistently and that is kind of pushing it

First off reloading should never be something you rush on...

Second if you can't consistently hit a target at 120 yards you best get some more practice in. Your going out to take an animals life.. You best be **** sure you can hit it where you aim.

Sounds to me as if you are just going out shooting in the direction of deer. Pretty unethical if you ask me...

Sure take him by all means have him leave the gun in closet, hand him your spotting scope, (it will be easier to carry any way) he can watch your shot. You will have someone to help pack out. It's a win, win. Unless of course you were speaking of yourself, in which case I'd just stay home and eat granola bars, and watch reruns of the Simpson's.:D:D:D

Amen to that Eric.

I don't think this person should be shooting at anything other than the paper plate. They obviously do not take hunting seriously and I would not want them with me.

Rick, good point, if they want to go give them the spotting scope and make them help you pack the critter out.

Nope not me. My prep is all year long it never really stops. I think I might go out first weekend with them and then hunt the rest of the season alone if I haven't had success yet.

I would wonder how careful this person is? How their muzzle control is and gun handling I mean your putting you life at risk by hunting with someone that's doing it half way. As far as the reloading he playing with fire an over charge or under charge can be deadly. Maybe take the time to show them the right way maybe he dose not know any better. Anyways have a safe and fun season.

I was wondering the same thing... :D

Dad told me a freaky story the other day. Customer from a few years ago came into the gun shop to drop off his rifle to have it cleaned. To start, it was dirtier than all get-out. I mean "strapped-to-the-front-of-a-four-wheeler-in-the-open-air-without-a-case-rain-snow-or-shine-for-the-whole-month-of-october" dirty. Absolutely filthy. Dad brings it in sets it on the bench and starts to look it over, wouldn't ya know it, it's loaded! I mean full magazine and one in the chamber ready-to-go loaded! Who carries their hunting gun around town, all summer long, with one in the chamber?? Then takes it to the smith and walks around the shop with it that way?? Some people's kids...
