First off ill start by saying that I am somewhat new to long range shooting, but with that said I have shot around 300 yards with .243's and .204's. I am planning on buying a 300 win mag and would like to spend around $1000. I understand you get what you pay for and for $1000 I will not be able to buy anywhere near a top of the line target rifle. I have read multiple forums and people have suggested guns like the savage FCP-K, Savage long range hunter, Remington 700 (sps,xcr, and sendero sf2).After looking at these guns I have some questions. How important is a muzzle brake? Has anyone had any experience with the savage long range hunter? What 300 do you recommend for a somewhat entry level long range shooter (500-700yrds)? I want to buy or build the best 300 possible for $1000. thanks

My guess is you will get every gun brand named here. Although I prefer Remington, I have several Savages and will keep buying them, if and when the need for a new rifle is necessary, as I had nothing but good results from the rifles. I guess my point is, buy the most rifle you can get for the money, but don't pass up the Savage.
Muzzle brake is not necessary but IMO on any magnum it helps follow shots and reduces recoil. I don't like recoil. So I like brakes. I think the scope for LR is way more important than the brand of rifle throwing lead down range.

Sendero SF II in 7mm RemMag or .300 WinMag. Or the Rem 700 5R MilSpec in .308 Win or .300 WinMag.
I bought a new Rem 700 Milspec 5R in 300WM back in February for $1100. This is my fourth Milpec in 10 years and as with the previous three in 308 it will stand right along side my customs when it comes to accuracy, giving consistent sub .5MOA performance out to 1000+ yards. The build quality of all of them has been excellent. I did change the Mark X trigger though. I own a LRH in 6,5x284 as well. It's also a very accurate rifle as well, and is a few hundred dollars less, but the Milspec has a much better stock, is all stainless.

If you can pony up another $100 a Senduro is the best bang for your buck. If you are solid on your $$ then the Win coyote lite in .300 WSM.
sendero or rem 5-r or build with a rem 700 and a krieger. for a me a brake is important. there is a thread somewhere on here about the loading for a savage long range hunter. where are you? what are you shooting at? caribou? fox? crows?

I would vote the Savage route. If it's truly budget oriented and you're OK with a factory sporter barrel, look at the 111/116 Trophy Hunter XP. 111 is black, 116 stainless. Right around 500 and you get DBM, old Nikon Prostaff 3-9 BDC scope, and decent factory trigger. Most report at least 1 MOA with the factory Savage.
Worst case, try it out. If your not happy with results, sell the barrel and rebarrel it. That puts you $400 into it after the barrel sale. You can EASILY get the action trued and a quality barrel for $600. You'll likely have enough left for a replacement stock. Boyds started making the DBM stock for Savages if you like laminate. They offer Thumbhole, monte carlo, standard, and their tactical models.
The scope is def not top quality, but it's serviceable. If you have one, you can always sell that too for a few bucks.
I realize this is outside the box and NOT necessarily the best option. Just throwing it out there in case you like to tinker. Since you're new, you may not have thought about this route.
If you're not set on a .300 WM, I'd look at other chamberings. 500-700 is doable pretty easily with your current .243 as long as it shoots. 300 WM is a pretty large jump recoil wise as well
6.5 Creedmoor will get you pretty easily to 1000 with very little recoil. Hornady factory match ammo is also very respectable and reasonably priced - usually around $25 +/- a box.
Anyways, just throwing out some ideas since you said you're new to LR shooting. Not trying to talk you out of the 300, just put out some ideas in case you hadn't thought of them.

Thanks for all of the info. I am from Ohio and will be shooting groundhogs mostly around 300-400 yards but can shoot targets further than that. I was initially planning on a .308 but after comparing the ballistics to the Win Mag I cant pass it up. I would prefer to buy a rifle, put a good scope on it, and be ready to shoot. Has anyone shot the Savage model 111 long range hunter? It has a 26 inch barrel, muzzle brake, accutrigger, and accustock. And you can get it for around $850. What do you guys think about it?

Totally understand you want turn-key. Here's the other Savage I would look at:

It gives you DBM and a different stock option. You'll have to ultimately decide what "style" you like better.
Brakes are love it or hate it. Everyone around you hates it. They do a nice job on recoil, but make it MUCH louder.
