My wife calls it "Stubby"

308
Action, trigger and stock from a Savage Model 12
15" Lilja barrel, bedded and braked by ATRS in Calgary
Sightron 3, 1-7 scope

When I got the build back, I couldn't figure out if it was dog ugly or the prettiest thing I'd ever seen... Still not quite sure, but it shoots half a minute and with the Sightron on 1 power, I can shoot with both eyes open like a red dot.

I like it! Always room for a compact rifle in the collection. The scope seems a bit out of place visually, but likely works just fine.

I like it as well, like it alot. Not sure about the optic either. If It was mine, would have iron sights. Thats an ideal woods/brush gun for around here, for short range deer. No optic really needed, IMO neither is the brake.

Nothing is 'legal' in New York State except what the gubbener deems legal.....

You can have a pellet rifle right???

We have some interesting laws here too. No silencers and if the stock folds, it's considered a pistol and is licensed accordingly. A silencer gets you 10 years in Marquette.

Still better than NY State and a whole bunch better than NYC. We were discussing the biker thing on another forum and the comment was made that if that happened here, the driver of the SUV probably would have used a firearm in self defense. As it was, he had nothing buit the police and seconds count, not minutes. Very sad.

Scrubbit... I take it you are a big person in stature? The reason I say that is the scope is sitting way proud of the rail. I'd play hell trying to adjust my length of pull and settle into the eye box with a scope that high up.... Just asking.

Yes, bigger than average. This is my standing, off hand rifle and I don't like to crane my neck down to the scope, so I got some of the highest rings I could. Does look odd though. My project this winter is to work on my snap and off hand shooting.

I read your moose thread from one end to the other and yes, I see you are a a large framed person. I'd never be able to acquire the eye box with rings that high. Very good read btw.

I've had some close encounters with moose in Canada myself but not in the hunting perspective. I learned real quick when on a snowmachine, you give any moose a wide berth.

Didn't know they floated until I read your thread. Interesting. Moose is **** good meat. I rank it right there with elk.

That brush gun will make a dandy offhand shooter. Strictly my opinion, I'd loose the bipod and/or add another post back a bit from the front one and at the bottom for a sling and you will be in business. You'll find that out for yourself. The bipod quickly becomes a deterrent.

Exactly what we do here for whitetails. Most everything is an offhand snap. If I can prep a shot, I do, using a tree branch or my knee in a sitting position but most times it's a snap shot. I use a 308 lightweight Savage (no brake) with a low power Vortex PST (4-16 at 4x) but Iron sights would suffice just fine and SGK's in Federal Brass with a medium load of H335, 0.030 off the lands. The key is a light weight rifle with quick target acquisition. The heavier the rifle, the more it takes to get that snap shot off and have it be an accurate shot. It's an entirely different discipline than long range shooting, entirely different.

I own a big boomer but I'd never consider it to be an offhand shooter, I'm not Charles Atlas.

The one thing I kick myself for was not getting a snot stock (I have a walnut stock), something I'll probably end up doing anyway. Wood stocks take a beating on a brush gun whereas a snot stock can take the abuse.

Have fun, I know you will.

Its called MAN sized,lol

NY sucks big time! Dont know about the biker ting? Elections soon

Hi Sidecar. I probably should have gotten a lighter barrel, but I'm a little addicted to the accuracy game, even in a rifle that doesn't need to be hyper accurate. The muzzle brake was so I could spot my own shots if I used it for varmint work, although the thing is ridiculously loud for a 308. Going to the range to do some load testing today and a scope test on my Vortex PST on the long range rifle that I shot the moose with. The bipod post is for a 24 in bipod that I use for sitting position out to about 400m. Depending on the type of hunting, I'd leave it at home.

One of our group bought a new Kimber chambered in 308 for his wife and put a brake on it and in my opinion, it has a louder report than my 338 braked Lapua for some reason. It's irritating to be behind the shooter and deafining to be diagonal to the muzzle when she ignites it even with shooting muffs on.

You'll still have fun, probably more fun with the brush gun than your long tube.
