308 Win powder

I have a supply of 4064 and Rl19.Does anyone have experience with these and something 168gr in a 308? I know powders like Varget is good, but I have these.

IMR4064 is and always will be my favorite powder in the 308. I like Varget as well and Re15. I buy the 4064 in 8 LB jugs for a reason though. Look no further for one of, if not the top powder for the 308.

Most of the military match ammo used to be loaded with IMR 4064. I read someplace that the new 175 gr match/sniper load uses IMR 4064. I personally use either IMR 4895 or IMR 4064 depending on what bullet weight I am using. IMR 4064 if it is over 150 grs of bullet.

Thanks for the replies.It is good that I have 4064 on hand.As strange as it sounds, I've never loaded a 308 in over 40 years of reloading.I also had alot of RL19, but that seems better for larger cases.I've read alot that Varget is pretty good,but try finding some.

I've used both Varget and 4064, and get better results over a wider range of bullet weights and velocities with 4064 rather than the Varget. All my 308's are out of Mod. 600 Remingtons with short barrels, so that may be the factor.

Keep the Re19 for 30.06 or 270 if you have one, or similar standard LA caliber. Re19 is among my favorites in the .06 and 270.

I used to use 4064 but switched to Varget, I bought a bunch back before this madness started. 4064 is a great powder for the 308 I was just looking for a powder that works in my 260 and Varget is that powder.

I heard the new Sniper load used RL15 & the reason that powder is so hard to find, but I have seen no proof of that at all, maybe they do use 4064.

I use 43.1 gr. of Varget and 178 A-Max in my 5R with vel. being 2615. I wonder if 4064 would yield faster velocity but with the same accuracy? Also, does 4064 vary more with temp. change than Varget?

Ive tried rl15 with 4 bullets 3 bullet weights 3 different primers in 3 different guns two .308 one 6br and cant get squat with it. I'm really scratching my head why. (Im trying so hard because im setting on 4lbs)

I use 43.8 gn of 4064 behind a 185 gn berger. Out of a 26" tube it get to 2580fps.
Yes in my experience 4064 is more temperature sensitive than varget.

I don't get too caught up with temp sensitivity. I've loaded rifle ammo here in Ohio in July and August with Reloder powders, IMR powders, VV powders, and AccurateArms powders and hunted out west in fall where it's colder and killed everything I ever shot at. Granted, I'm a lucky guy I guess because everything is typically within 350 yards.

If temp is a major concern for you then load your ammo during the same time of year you plan on hunting with it. No worries.
