Its not a "long range" cartridge by any means....but does anyone have a good idea at what distance a 222 will kill cleanly on prairie dogs, wood chucks...etc sort of animals?

I just picked one up and topped it with a Zeiss 6-20 and will hand load NO LARGER than 50 grain slugs at 200 yards. That makes me good from zero to 200 and not that much low at 300...but its tap city for 400 yards...lol

Im figuring a 0-200 yards easy to carry rifle.

Of course the 50 grain bullets are susceptible to the wind, but good at least out to 400 yards.

Wind is big with any .22 centerfire. I also think it will work well out to 400, wind being a deciding factor on hits. I have one and use the 40 grain V-Max in mine. mtmuley

Ive got 40 and ..?? 46 grain slugs ( I think they are 46 gr??) to load and most probably will try and do 250 yrd max shots. Should be a killer at 250 yards. Thanks

In its day, the triple deuce was THE round for accuracy nuts. It still has a loyal, albeit, small following even today. Sounds like you got a keeper. Should be good out to 400 yds.

try a 55 grain Vmax over AA2230 or AA2015BR at close to max loads. It'll do close to 3100 fps, and be good for an honest 350 yards. Or about the same as a .223, but much better groups.

G'day, here in Australia, I use my 222 predominantly as a walk around varmint/predator rifle, but also use it for the odd bit of spotlighting. I run Nosler Shots in 50gr @ 3300fps, my maximum range is 400yrds, where it has 24" of drop, I don't bother doping the scope, I just hold over. In any type of breeze, I won't shoot past 300yrds, too much drift for my liking.
In my Sako L461 Vixen 24" barrel, I can walk around in the hills and not even notice the rifle on my shoulder, I really like this little rifle and cartridge. A CZ 527 would be just as handy, I reckon.
I have killed cleanly small pigs, goats, foxes, wild dogs and rabbits with my 222 out to 400yrds, it really is a tremendously accurate little cartridge when you do your part.

Cheers.

Info mucho appreciated fellas. I had this rifle built special for me....a Stiller TAC action...22" Brux #3 barrel and the Jewell trigger.

I have bullet weights galore here with the 22-250's I shoot. 50's and 55's of many brands.

If the weather holds out for me I'll get that Zeiss scope I have mounted all zero'd in on it and I can get a chance to see what she'll do for me.

Thanks again guys
