Long Range thick skin bullets

Had a moose hunt go bad when shot at less than 100 yards with a berger 250 at 2900 fps. A friend of mine just shot a moose three times and the bullets did not perform. They expanded to rapidly thus not making it to the goodies. Well since I load his ammo does anyone know of a good long range bullets that will perform up to buffalo size game. We are from the east not to educated on the really big game bullets.

Where are the pictures? How was the animal brought down? I will assume 338 something and what Berger bullet was it?

don't even shoot bergers but every bullet at one time for some one some where has failed. chalk it up to **** happens

No Bergers here either, except the ones on the grill this evening.

I load for 7 hunters and it's all Sierra or Barnes or they can load them themselves.

I too am curious as to what caliber, and the circumstances.

If you fill any animal with enough lead, something has to happen...or it gets lead poisoning.

I am just getting the reports back from Alaska now. They got the moose took three shots. 338 lapua mag at 2900 fps. I was advised that the bullets split in half and lost penetration. No war is intended just giving a report from the field. This guy wants to shoot a water buffalo with this rifle and is unhappy with the bullets results. I have no experience with game of this size. Looking for a bullet that can keep some long range ability but perform on big animals.

Shooting a water buffalo with a Berger, or any thin skinned bullet like that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. I've never hunted them but from everything I've heard, I would probably go with something like a Swift A-frame or the like.......Rich

Did you load the OTM or the Hunter version? I shoot the 250's from my RUM at 3100 and I was planning on making sure I didn't punch the shoulder on elk until I got at least 800 yards on it, an Alaskan moose is quite a bit bigger.

Bob Beck has smoked cape buffalo with the Berger 300 OTM from a 338-378!

I just harvested a big muley with 300 gr otms @2830, deer was only 80 yards and never moved at the shot. Bullet did not exit, entered behind the shoulder and there is a bullet diameter hole in the off shoulder, but I haven't cut the meat up yet to see if a fragment is in there. The damage in the chest cavity was devastating. It looked like a hand grenade went off. I had same results last year with a big bodied bull elk at 550 yards, drt. I don't know that it would be good for a bone breaking shoulder shot, but behind the shoulder it is devastating. I do seem to prefer the heavier for caliber bullets with berger though. Accubonds or Swift A frames would be my choice for a bullet to penetrate with a follow up by barnes tipped triple shock.
