Best 6.5 bullet for elk??

6.5 Sherman. Can push the 140 at 3100+- a few. Should be able to get the 160 at 2950 or so. Shot the 140 bergers this weekend and all were in 1/2 Moa. A few in the .3's.

I say berger especially if you already got them shooting well. No need for additional load tuning and barrel ware.

Say u have a frontal shot? Would u take it with the vld? What about the same scenario at 25 yds. That's my concern. Killed a lot of critters with the bergers just not elk.

I have had really good luck with the Barnes LRX bullets. However at 25 yards any bullets would be dicey at that velocity. At 300 yards my last Mule Deer did not take one step after being double lunged. It put him down in a hurry and very humanely.

What grain and velocity?

I wouldn't hesitate one bit. I have never had a berger fail me and with the great sectional densities of the 6.5 I don't think you are going to have to worry about penetration.

So far a bear, mountain goat, some big whitetails and a bunch of antelope have fallen to a 140 berger for me. Have an elk tag later this year and will either carry the 6.5-06 or a 7mm shooting 168 bergers.

Please don't take offense on this but you might want to read Long Range Hunting Online Magazine - FAQ regarding your sig line and location info or contact the site owner/admins or moderator.

Cheers!
