Weatherby, Rem 700, Savage

Hello gentlemen,

So I am looking to build yet another rifle. I'm looking at a 338 Edge, but also a big 7mm of some sort.
I have a weatherby vanguard S2 300 wby, Rem 700 ADL 30-06, and a donor savage 111 action.

I know some pros and cons of some of the actions.

Obviously the 700 is one of the most widely used actions out there, tons of aftermarket parts and gunsmiths to work on it.

Savage, I can re-barrel myself when I want.

Now the weatherby, I'm not terribly familiar with.


Now here is my dilemma. I would sell one to help offset costs of build, or maybe it would be best to sell them all and get one custom action.

I'm just looking for some opinions, and experiences here.
All help is appreciated.

Which gun shoot the best? Which one is your favorite? The Weatherby action is superb to build off of. The Remington action is really a favorite among rifle builders. If you build off the Savage action you keep both of the other rifles.

Of the 3, the Vanguard is my favorite, 1 piece ported bolt , m16 extractor, Integral recoil lug. That said, IMO it's too short for anything larger/longer than a Dakota case. It is approx 1/4" shorter than the 700. I just did a 300 RUM build on a 700 action and I spent a good bit upgrading it with one piece bolt, Sako extractor, heavy duty pinned recoil lug, extended center feed mag box, etc. You can do the build off the 700 but IMO you would be better off with a custom action for the EDGE build. Sell one or two or all of the possible donors and put the $$$ toward a custom action.

I've only shot the 30-06 much, and it shoots pretty good. The Weatherby only has 40 rounds through it, and I have not shot the savage 270 at all as it was bought strictly for the action.

I had tried some reloading with the wby, but couldn't seat to the lands as the magazine length did not allow.

I currently have a 6.5 Sherman in the works, so not sure if I'll need the 30 cals, but just can't readily bring myself to sell one. I figured with the arrangement of big game calibers I would have, a 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, 338mm, there wouldn't be a gap to fill,

Yes the 7LRM has definitely peaked my interest.

A lot of Weatherby's are free throated and the only way to reach the rifling is to shoot them like a single shot. Use the savage action since that is why you bought it or sell the action and get a custom gun start would be what I would do in your circumstance.

Maybe set one up with an 8 twist for the new berger 195 EOL!

That is a standard situation with longer cartridges in factory rifles. Can't load to the lands and fit in the mag.

If you're considering a 7 LRM, it would work in the Vanguard barely, depending on what reamer you use. You would want a throat that would allow seating to the lands and with COAL that would fit in the mag box.

I just completed 2 builds on a Vanguard and S&W M1500 (same as the Vanguard) and as i mentioned another on the 700. The 700 cost several hundred more in parts and smithing to upgrade it to what I wanted for a good build.

If you go with the 7 on the Vanguard you have a somwhat limited selection of stocks, being B&C Medalist, McMillan and Manners. The Manners is not a true fit, I found that out the hard way, the tang of the action protrudes above the stock so the tang must either be ground down or stock built up, My smith just rounded the edges of the tang, but there is stil a shop time fee for that. I would recommend a McMillan.

The B&C Medalist is a full aluminum bedded stock and less expensive than the others. But in the standard (long) action, it is only available in a sporter style which doesn't allow for a heavier barrel than a #5. I put a Broughton Light Varmint Sporter Contour in mine which has a muzzle of .700-.720

Here is a pic... note, I had a tactical knob welded to the bolt handle and it does not have a final finish. When Nitrided it will be matte black.

Great looking rifle. Does it have the pressure point weatherby recommends, or is it free floated?

I bought the savage used, sorry for not clarifying it.

Anything other than upgrading stock on the 300 wby. What 2-10 or somewhere in that range scope will stand up to that recoil, without breaking the bank. (would love nightforce, but not on a factory rifle).

No, I don't believe in pressure points because they will never be constant. They are ok for turning a 2 MOA rifle into a 1 MOA rifle give or take, but not good for real precision. My smith bedded the action and barrel in front of the lug to where the barrel tapper starts.

If you do a build and get the action blueprinted, match barrel, good stock etc, you no longer have a factory rifle. It's basically a semi-custom. If you're going to shoot LR (1K and farther) my first recommendation would be the scope my rifle is wearing. A 5.5-22 NXS. If you want to get a good budget scope, get the best Vortex you can afford.
