A bit of interest in hunting Sambar down under at the moment. There's plenty of animals and great hunting all year round.

Here is one I took a couple of weeks ago for the freezer. Not a real long shot at a tad under 400 yards but quite difficult due to the 22 degree down angle of the shot. The shooting position was also very difficult so I had to shoot left handed, not easy for a natural right handed person.

Rifle used was a Remington custom in .338 RUM, 25.5" barrel, loaded with 250gn Berger Elite Hunter bullets at 2950fps.

I hope you find it interesting.

Now THAT is what I call a money-shot! :D

I think he was dead before he ever hit the ground...LOL

So is a Sambar like a "Delk"? Kind of like a mix between a deer and an elk? I'd love to shoot one of those, that's a cool lookin animal. How do they taste? Like vinison?

Anyway, great shot!

Mudrunner,
They are a large deer. Strong and tough.
The meat is good on most but old large stags can be tough. They make great mince steak though and you get plenty of burgers out of one. :)

Great left handed shot Topshot! Thanks for posting the vids... love watching them!

So do you have a limit you can take or are they open season all year with no limit?

No Bag limit, 12 month open season. Although some National Park areas are closed during the school holydays for obvious reasons. The State Forests are open all year round.

We should be sending our bullets over to you for terminal testing :)

Don't worry, I do plenty of terminal testing... :D
The .338 cal, 250gn Berger Elite Hunter is fast becoming my favourite bullet. But a few 375gn Rocky Mountain bullets out of my .375 Cheytac will get a work out soon.
