Build from factory

I'm looking at going for a semi custom build and would like a little advice.
I plan to start with a good gun and build from there.
I've looked at the Sendero and the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather. !'m not sure what others to look at.
I want to have the action blueprinted and get a new barrel.

The calibers that I'm looking at are 7wsm, 264 win mag and the 270wsm.

I'll be hunting Deer and Elk out to 800 yards or so.
I currently have a 270WSM that I love, but my daughter keeps shooting and is starting to think is hers. I also have a custom 300 RUM that I've set up for long distance.

I'm looking for something that will replace my 270 as I think I'll loose it in the long run.

Honestly I would invest in another custom rifle. I have seen and learned from my own mistakes and experience in this area that all to often you start with a good factory rifle and with good intentions...but by the time the project is done you have met or exceeded the cost of a custom.... I would recommend looking at the offerings from www.snowymountainrifles.com a sponsor here before making a decision. They can get you into a custom rifle for what you would have in a sendero with all the modifications.

if your requirement are 800 yards, I would go factory. Rather than the extreme weather (which is too light for %95 of shooters to shoot long rang) I would look at the Coyote light. Only $100 more for the heavy barrel and a much better design for LR.

The Senduro is a great platform, but more money and IMO no more rifle. the only upside to the senduro is the longer barrel (which doesn't matter to me) and the slightly better HS stock.

Of course if your set well financially and enjoy fine things, a custom rifle will make you much happier.

Top it with optics that cost AT LEAST what the rifle costs. spending under $1000 on optics/rings/bases/level... is looking for a head ache in the long range game. I have set up rifles with good optics and very inexpensive rifles and had them do much better than most would give them credit for... Still no custom, but gets er' done.

I have 2 7wsm both in browning x-bolts one with a brux barrel on it and one that still has factory browning barrel on it. We use them for exactly what you are looking to do. My girlfriend shoots the factory ricle and can consistantly hit 1 gallon milk jugs at 700yds. They are on the lite side but accurate and easy to carry. Recoil is not bad. Enough umph for elk. Dont get me wrong i love my custom stuff but for $750 these x-bolts with a good reload i think are awesome. Either way have fun.

Sendero or 5R MilSpec gets my vote.

My strategy for doing a semi custom build is to fins a used old cheap rifle or action for lowest cost I can. There is no sense in buying a new rifle for new rifle prices just to tear it apart.

My first choice in actions for the cals you list is the Howa/Vanguard. Next is the M70. IMO Rem 700's need a lot of mods to boost their quality and for the cost, you would pay almost the same for a full custom.

Go find the cheapest used rifle you can with a good action, get it blue printed, put on a good match grade barrel and put it into a good quality stock and have fun, or better yet, just get a custom action to start with.

BTW, a 6.5 WSM has the same capacity as a 264 WM

I do agree with Mark's point...It really is kind of pointless to buy a $1,500 rifle then rip it apart and true it all up and stick it back together, UNLESS you get a smokin deal on the rilfe. Then it's totally worth it.

I do the budget build thing. I find a good new or used action for a couple hundred bucks, then slowly buy up my parts and then once I have my parts, take it all to the smith and have him put his voodoo on it. If I don't go crazy on the options, I wind-up spending about what you do on a good factory rifle, not including the optics. And I KNOW that i's not a hit-or-miss factory rifle. Except with mine, the only time it misses is when I fudge the shot.

The reason I mentioned the Sendero SFII or 5R MilSpec is because both of those will shoot sub-MOA if you do your part behind the boom switch, and you will not need to visit a gunsmith. They both have high-quality stainless steel barrels, the actions are first-quality picks, and the rifles are hand-fitted to tighter tolerances than less expensive model rifles. And they both come with HS Precision aluminum bed blocked stocks. All you need is a good scope, rings, and base and possibly to bed the recoil lug or action, float the barrel, and you're ready to start practice. No wait times from the gunsmith, or time gathering parts...
