200 yd zero for a .25-06?

I have a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in .25-06 with a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14 on it. Where I hunt deer, it would be very possibly to have a 400 yard shot over a wide open field. So if the conditions were right and I had a steady rest and was comfortable with the shot, would a 200 yard zero allow me to shoot to 400 just by holding over? I know the .25-06 shoots flat for everything under that 200 yd zero. Anyone have experience doing this? Thanks.

With a 200 yard zero you're going to be close to 18" low at 400 yards, so with an average deer's chest you'll need to hold over his back a good 8 inches or more to put a bullet into the vitals for a killing shot. I'm using handloaded Hornady 117 grain BTSPs with a zero at 200 yards, but where I'm hunting I won't get any shots as far as you're talking about.

Sight it in 3 inches high at 100 yds or dead on at 275 yds & any Deer out to 350 yds just aim at the center of chest This is with Hornadys Superformance Ammo 117 SST sight in dead on at 275 yds drop at 350 yds is only 6.4 inches at 400 yds 12.7 low then just put cross level with back of Deer & you will bag it. To tell you the truth with most rifles sighted in 3 inches high at 100 yds from muzzle to 325-350 yds just aim and shoot. Good Hunting

I sight in my rifles to have a MPBR (Maximum Point Blank Range) of 8". This means that the bullet will not rise or fall more than 4" from the line of sight. With the 25-06 using 110gr Accubonds, for example, the sighting in requirements are as follows:
At 100yrds you would sight in to be printing 3" high, this would give you a zero range of 294yrds, and the MPBR is 346yrds, you would be down around 8" @ 400yrds. That is a flat trajectory in anyones language.

I run the "point blank range" with all my critter gitter/hunting rifles. works great just center the vitals and shoot. Neco has a good program for that.

i own a 25-06 and so do a few of the local hunters i know. everybody but myself zeroes them at mpbr. that is three inches high at 100 yds. i use a ballistic reticled scope so i zero at 200 yds or 1.6 inches high at 100 yds using hornady 117 gn interlock bullets exclusively. theres some great advice from the crew on this subject. best of luck.
