.45 acp-----.45 lc

One of my brothers and I got into a friendly brotherly discussion. Basically...He says that if he buys a Henry's 45 Long Colt rifle he can use his .45 ACP ammo in it. I say he can't. Whose right??

45 ACP is a rimless cartridge so no. I think the only time you can shoot 45 ACP in a 45 LC is in a revolver with the moon clip that grabs it at the base. Don't quote me on that, though. Hopefully someone more knowledgable on the cartridge can give you a good answer.

No you CAN NOT use 45 ACP in a rifle chambered in 45 Colt. The ACP is a rimless case and the Colt is a rimmed case. In SOME revolvers you can use both but the 45 ACP has to use the moon clips. These revolvers are specially made to use both rounds.

Smith and Wesson made a very collectable revolver that used both (with clips), I have one. Lets add some more mud to the mix. There is the 45 auto rim as well.

Yepper. Made for use in the revolvers that HAD TO HAVE a moon clip to shoot 45 ACP....but with the AR round ( stands for automatic rimmed) ya just slipped them in like you would in a Long Colt revolver

probably won't shoot in the first place as there wouldn't be anything to headspace off of. There's also a difference in the loaded diameter as the "acp" case is smaller.

Since a little after WWII the 45 Colt bores have been standardized to shoot .542 Jacketed bullets. The 45 ACP uses .451 Jacketed bullets. With cast lead bullets most 45 Colts shoot well with .452 but some do need up to .545. Most 45 ACPs shoot best with .452 cast bullets.

Yes he did transpose some numbers, .454 is what he is meaning. I have 2 win lever actions in 45LC. One 16" and the other is a 20" octagon barrel, color case hardened, love them The wife has kinda taken over the 16", I put a Lyman receiver peep on it , it is a fast shooting little rifle .
