Bullet wt's for 6.5x284

Is the 140 grain bullet the heaviest that can be used in the 6.5x284?

That's what I have been working with the last couple days. In a 24" 1 in 9 twist no less. They seem stable and I am at 4100' als.

If u have fast enough twist and the right bullet there are some 160 gr available.

All I ever read about is the 140's. Was curious wasn't sure if there was enough case capacity to launch much heavier. Is the 6.5x284 Norma the only company that makes factory rounds? There is only couple wildcat cartridges worth the extra work that I would be willing to deal with. But this one is growing on me and curiosity is working. Think this would be good one for my girls to shoot. Thanks for the reply.

This is a 52 Cooper I am working with. There is no love affair sparking for me with this light rifle. But I have another custom going together, 8 twist barrel of a heavier contour and braked. I have a feeling it will be a lot more to my liking.

This cooper I have been working with the last few days is a friends rifle. I just am setting it up for him. I just went out in the yard and put one dead center of an 8" circle on a rock at 905 yards. Then dialed for a 1/2 moa calcium spot with a 12* up hill shot at 668 yards. About tennis ball size and blew the center out of it. So maybe we are bonding a little.

Sure is nice having a shooting range in the yard... Especially on these cool evenings as the sun is setting.

Having a range in my back yard would be a dream come true. Unfortunetly got to settle for local gunn ranges here in the CDA area. Got three rifles to sight in the weekend of the 26th hope the range isn't packed with people. My job don't really allow much time to enjoy shooting as much as I would like , but make the best of what time I can get. Sounds like you are working with a sweet shooting rifle.

While not currently listed on their web site, JLK has produced a 142 gr VLD that has a BC of .640 compared to .612 for the Berger. I have shot both in my Cooper 520. The higher BC of the JLK appears valid because I need about 20FPS more velocity in the Berger to get the same POI at 1000 yards. Performance on game between the two is indistinguishable. I've had a batch of these JLK's that that I acquired a few years ag that I shoot very sparingly, and I have used exclusively for my hunting loads. At 2970FPS using Retumbo they will group under an inch at 500 yards in my 1:8 twist Cooper. It's absolutely deadly at 1000 yards if I get the conditions right.

As popular as this is wonder how long before others start making factory ammo. Win,Rem,, Black Hills etc... someday maybe they will. Thank for the information

Both HSM and BOTW produce ammo for the 6.5x284. I haven't used the HSM but have tried the BOTW a couple of years ago. While pricy, it is very accurate and produced velocities, ES comparable to my hand loads. The ones I had used were loaded with 57 gr of Retumbo and JLK 's and Lapua brass. They were quite good.

In past 6.5x284's I have used the older 142 JLK and the 142 Precision. The SMK as well, but what they are they didn't do it for me. Most 6.5x284s will struggle to top 2800fps with a 140. My 26" factory barrels (Cooper and a Savage) would just make 2825 on a hot day with a case killer of H1000 and the 140 berger. I am a hunter first and foremost and have seen enough marginal bullet performance at LR. I have sorta settled on 2900fps/.450 BC as minimums for what we do here. More of the BC preferred and a min of the FPS at muzzle.


Currently I am using the 140 Berger (well no, currently my rifles are apart, I ain't using nothing') in a to be finished 28" heavy rifle, but in a pending lighter weight 6.5x284 I will be trying the 123 Hornady as its barrel is 23".........


I guess to say, 140gr is enough. The former Savage got a lot of work but ran out of ele at 1220yds. The former Cooper with a 20moa U.S. Optics rail and a 4.5x14 zeiss went to the mile gong about 90 of the 100 or so rounds I fired from it.

I have used the 142SMK for mine but currently using the Hornady 129 SST.
Black Hills has/does load for this round, mostly special order now but maybe it will be in their standard practice again sometime.
