Is there a guide to ring height somewhere? I'm going to mount a 4.5-14x50 1" leupold to a 20 moa picatinny base. I'll be using TPS rings. Can anyone help with height recommendation? Barrel is hunting weight not heavy. Thanks

Depends on the manufacturer. Look at the measurements not the low/medium/high description.

Semper Fi +1

This might help:

Objective diameter (mm) ________ (not lens dia., this is the outer objective dia.)
+ 4mm (for scope cover) ________

divide total by 2 _______
subtract 1/2 tube diameter ______

The total is the bottom of the scope tube height above your barrel/receiver. (assuming a straight, non-tapered barrel, a tapered barrel will give you some leeway)

This is the height that your base + rings must equal to keep the objective bell off of your barrel, and adds 2mm for your scope cap/cover.

Ideally you would like this height to be as low as possible. Check where the end of your scope bell comes on the barrel, if you have a large taper, you might be able to use a lower ring height.

Check your ring manufacturer specs. Some will indicate ring height at the bottom of tube ring, some will indicate ring height at the mid tube height. If you use a rail, this height will be from the top of the rail. If you use a one piece mount, it will be the height above the receiver.

Hope this helped.

Thanks Docb, that's a great formula.

marinetowgunner, thanks a bunch. I see you're an expert on tps rings and egw base's. I went to egw's website and it seems they make a base for my sako m995. Im going to call them to verify. That would be great if it works

My Pleasure,

Again +1 on the EGW Bases. I run a flat EGW picatinny base on my 300WM also.

Nice solid mount for the Burris Signature Z Rings. They might not be as 'taticool' as the TPS rings, but they will allow you to correct for any imperfections in your mounting and alignment arrangement and obtain a perfect alignment.

Also they do not have to be lapped in order to assure adequate ring to scope contact to prevent slippage. The Posi-align inserts will not mark or mar your expensive scope also.

When it comes to equipment and weapon system set up, the little things that didn't mean much at 100-500yds will suddenly jump up and slap you in the face when you start going beyond 600yds.

Biotin works good to help grow back the hair you'll pull out while trying figure out the little things that add up to big things in long range shooting!:D

Have a great time, it's worth the trouble... and hair!
