Hey all. I have been curious. I don't have any ballistic software and want to know. What is the max point blank range of the 160gr A-Bond from say a 280AI or 7 Mag,at 2900 fps using an 8" kill zone. Compared to the same A-Bond in 180gr from an 06 at 2750 fps? Using the same 8" vital. Maybe there isn't enough difference to bother with. Anyone want to iron this out for me? Thanks!

I'm confused....Do you want max effective distance, or closest effective distance. Because max means farthest, and point blank means 0-3 feet..., but is often used to describe distances less than 50 yards.

Honestly, the 160 moving 150 fps faster should have near equal energy as the 180 inside of 100 yards.

I'd bet they mean; which cartridge shoots farthest, within an 8 kill zone, without needing to adjust the scope.

I would think the faster more aerodynamic bullet; (assuming the "280AI or 7 Mag... 160gr A-Bond" is more aerodynamic.)

Here is what I came up with on the JBM calc.

.284 160 gr @ 2900 fps Max PBR = 341 yds with a 288 yd zero using a 4" radius. (8" kill zone) yielding 2399 ft lbs of energy. +3.2" @ 100yds

.308 180 gr @ 2750 fps Max PBR = 324 yds with a 273yd zero using a 4" radius. 2438 ft lbs energy. +3.4" @ 100yds.
