Got a win 70 in .30-06 that I have been thinking about having rebuilt to a .300wm and reamed for 210-215 Bergers I know bolt head will need replaced. Is the .300 And the .06 brass the same length? Magazine length on .06 to short for coal for .300 with the bergers? Looking at shooting single shot with that set up?
Or is it better to rebuild to .30-06AI or 280AI?
The .06 needs some work anyway so throwing out possible ideas and looking for some experienced opinions. Could sell or trade for Savage in a .300. Thanks in advance

I shoot a Pre 64 Mdl 70 in 30-06 that I just rebuilt and kept it a 06. Was thinking just like you but after a lot of research decided against the 300 WM because of the short magazine. Both the 06 and the 300 have a 3.340 OAL but if you want to use the heavy bullets Bergers, Accubond etc and set them out to get the full potential of the round then the magazine restrictions ruin it. My smith talked me out of building a 06AI as the gain to me was not worth the extra work reloading. Also did a lot of research and to enlarge the magazine was very difficult and could find no one who wanted to fool with it including my smith.

Would a .300wsm be doable in the .06 length action? Or more hssdle then its worth

Yes, to both, However, having a long action WSM really opens up the potential!

I had my ol' Winchester Model-70 (push feed) 30-06 turned into a 300WSM.
Open up the bolt face (also had it fluted)
Fluted 26" Hart #4 contour 10 twist
Throated for 200gr Accubonds
Mini Muscle brake
Pillar Bedded
Smith had to do some tinkering to get the bottom metal dialed, & get it feeding right. 3+1 configuration.

There's some work involved, but Well worth it for the performance gain of a Long Action WSM.

I'm flingin 180 Accubonds into sub half MOA 3shot groups at over 3100fps. (Which is faster than my factory Win-70 24"bbl 300Wby.

Winmag did you use the smith in Bend Or can't think of his name at the moment John I believe is his first name. You have it throated for 200gr accubond have you tried 210-215Bergers or is the throat to short for those?
I could even go with .280AI as well as .270AI very nice rifle by the way.

Winmag out of curiosity are you the one that has the pic of your win .300 in a light tan manners then switched to darker green color? That may have been a full length .300WM.
This is giving me some food for thought I could even go with 7mm short mag as well. Decisions decisions thanks for the information

No, but I will keep my next build local.

I don't know. I have plenty of room for longer ones. I don't drink the Berger Koolaid. Some do, some don't. Nosler has never let me down, so why switch.

No. PM me your email & ill send you pics. Posting them on LRH takes a computer science degree, & a 1/2 hr min. For me

Winmag did you have smith do everything? Order barrel, stock, muzzle break etc.. or did you. Otfrr parts and send Smith parts?

Being that it was my first build, I had a lot of questions for him. He had good advise, & alot more knowledge than me, so I did my best to adhere to what he said.

I had a list of what I wanted done, & he helped me choose Quality components.
For example;
I wanted a 26"min fluted bbl, but not a boat anchor taper. He pointed me to a couple bbl makers that offered what I wanted. I chose Hart, partially because he had a working relationship with them, & partially because they fit what I was looking for.

I knew I wanted a Mini Muscle break from Jim See already, so that was easy, he just called Jim & ordered one.

He didn't flute Winchester bolts, so he sent it to Idaho to have it done.

Just a long combination of coordinating Quality components for the build.
I chose what I wanted, & he ordered it. I figured it'd be easier for him with his contacts.

If I could offer any advise, I'd recommend;
-talking to a few smiths, & see who you mesh with the best.
-before the build starts, have an idea who/what your smith recommends.
-pay an initial deposit, but do not pay for the whole project before it is complete.
**my smith never asked me to pay up front.** I chose to pay up front anyway. 100% my fault, but I would not choose that route again. You have no flex whatsoever if he has no real incentive to finish your project. The completion date can keep getting pushed further & further. This creates tension, & is not good for business. Plus you never know what your going to get back as a finished product. You may be thrilled, you may be absolutely Livid.
-have a solid idea of exactly what you intend to do with your rifle. (Example Elk @ long range, or Whitetails from a tree stand or whatever)
This will help keep your choices, & your smiths recommendations focused in 1 direction. It's easy to get de-railed with endless possibilities of cool stuff.
-have loading components (Brass, Bullets, & Dies etc) so you can send some dummy rounds for throating, unless you want factory saami spec chamber
Also compare your longest COAL to other bullets you may choose for a different application. I sent one of each dummy round with a 200 gr accubond goal, & made sure it wasn't so far out there that I couldn't shoot 180's.

Good luck

Thanks for the information. I have 3 smiths in the Coeur d' Alene and spokane area. One to to sure about. Have talked to him before but I detected couple possible red flags that's why I asked if you had ordered your stock etc. I will deffinetly keep notes etc... I will call builder in Bend as well. Thanks again for the incite. I am sure I will have more questions

If your looking for reputable smiths in Bend, I've here's good things about Tom & Randy at The Rifle Shop.

Also Dominion Accuracy. I've seen some of his work, & I'm impressed.

If your looking in Oregon in general, the guys from South Bend Oregon have a great reputation, & at least one of them is a LRH member. Helpfull & polite too.

In Idaho, you've got Shawn Carlock!
You've also got Lorenzo Young I think. Maybe he's in Utah...? Royinidaho has great things to say about him. He's also an LRH member.

If you want to look out of state, Joel Russo, 308Nate, JE Customs, Kirby, etc tons of great smiths who are LRH Members.
Jim See was one of the best, but he works for Surgeon now.
You've got a wide open book of great smiths to choose from.

Huge group to choose from. Not to sure if he works on win. He is so busy makes me wonder if he works on them in his sleep.
Shawn only works on rem 700's. No matter got lots of time to write notes and ask questions.

Has anyone just had smith blue print action, add new barrel, recoil lug, rail and break then do stock yourself. I can see where that could be issue for testing etc..
