6.5x284norma

Retumbo is a solid performer in the 6.5x284. I would work up from 55 grs. With 140 gr Bergers/JLK's , my rifles produce 2950-3000 FPS with 57.5 gr. using magnum primers. I have never tried AB's but my VLD seating depth is .075" off the lands. H4831sc is anther good powder, but velocities will run 50-75FPS slower, charge wts. of 50-53gr. I have no experience using H1000 in this caliber.

Alright men. Got to the "range" today and to my surprise the savage is shootin bullet holes inside bullet holes at 100yrds off a backpack off the ground in a 20 mile an hour head wind coal 3.24 with 55.5 grns retumbo with cci mag 250 primers and no psi signs. Gonna try a few more grains gradually later on. Real impressed with the rifle

Glad it worked out for you. You should be able to get a couple more grains. This should put you around 2950-3000FPS. Depending on your altitude, the AB's should give you 1000 Ft/pds energy around 800 yards, Berger Hunting 140VLD's will get you to 1000 yards with good expansion. The Savage is a great shooting rifle. Mine holds under 1.5" at 500 yards.....if I'm on my game.

Now I'm starting to think about scopes and bases to get me to 1k. I've been looking at the one piece talley rings and bases I have a set on a rem 700 that I really like the concept of just having a solid design between the two and then for scope either a nightforce or a huskemaw. Also was wondering what mods you've found necassary to make on your savage if any?

I use the one pc. Talley's and a Husky 5x20 on my LRH and my Cooper520 in the same caliber..It's a great combo. I like the weight and size of this scope and the turret precision and optical clarity is excellent. The scope just barely clears the ring distance on the tube using the standard medium height Talleys on the LRH. It happens to give me good eye relief, but I'd recommend offset rings to give more room for adjustment. The only other adds on my rig is a Holland scope level available from Sinclairs and a Harris bipod.
