So I just sold my custom 300 RUM and have decided to build a 300 win to replace it. This rifle is to be a carry rifle so weight and length are important. I am thinking using a Defiance action with a #4 interupted fluted Barrel finished at 25" so with Brake it will probabaly finnish at 27". I am also thinking of buying the parts myself and then having a smith put them together. What are your thoughts on the design and also ordering the parts first. Thanks Corey

After consulting the smith that you choose I support you ordering all the parts first. The parts listed sound nice. Right now for an accuracy build, Bartlien and Kreiger are really shining in the quality department in that order. Which stock do you have in mind?
I really like the looks of that HS Precision stock in Shadow grass I think they call it. Not 100% on it but it is what I like right now.

Hey 300,
We are pretty close to the same wave length I'm doing a 7 RemMag. That decision was made for me by the available brass at the start I got 75 virgin and 125 once fired. I can anneal so thats good. I got a barrel (Kreiger) from a gunsmith that had lots. I found Northwest Action Works just before they listed here. Got my action in 90 days Evan Pine is a good guy. Ordered a Manners stock ('cause Len says they are good) They have stuff on the shelf ready to deliver. Got my MCS-T3 in 4 days. That is a hunting/tactical model. If you order from them be sure to go through the stockbuilder program as it'll come up with stuff you didn't think of that you might want. Mine came through as an ADL single shot and I expected a magwell. Brownell has the parts and I have the machine shop. I ordered the reamer from PT&G, FB of .188 per Dave Kiff for use with 180gr VLD hunting.
I'm thinking your leade time on the action is going to be rude. I just got my order in before the SHOT show after which it seems everyone took orders to production capacity. I heard Defiance was buying more capacity but do not know. Wish BigHorn would.
Me and hired took the same class. I keep taking them whenever I run into a teacher. I think doing your own work is more satisfying. Amazing how many gunsmiths start out that way.

Pro & con on your choices 300 WinMag will throw plenty big bullets and can be bought at any gun shop in hunting territory. 300WSM (and 300SAUM) are both more accurate with handloads.
Stocks; I can only say that the Manners website will show you all you need. If you want a custom, then Joel Russo is tops (with me anyway). Although jewel is tops for competition, Timney seems a good choice for a hunting rifle.
The sticker is the scope. My limited experience is Swarovski resolves the image at any power better than the rest. Maybe better than we need but there it is.
Talk to your smith. You should be as much a friend as a customer unless you are doing a long distance relationship.
