Hey fellas , I was browsing Midway this morning and I see that they catalog a .338 300 gr custom competition bullet with a BC of .800 it may be and option for me seing how other bullets are hard to come buy. It is not in stock yet but estimated for late july. Has any body else have any insight on this bullet.

I have 500 on order. Intent is to try them on both elk and mule deer this comming hunting season for comparison to the SMK. Anticipated delivery date is July.

No, from the factory. The bullets will be used for practice in preparation for competition. However, big game hunting also utilizes skills required for competing.

I have been having great success with my recently built 338 rum using 300 gr berger elite hunter at 1k plus. Since i was not sure what the rifle would like I only purchaced 100 of them and now I am out and can't seem to get any and I was hoping to have my hunting loads in assembly for this coming season and now it seems I may have to try another bullet . With the summer heat approaching I hate to think about developing a new load and varifying trajectory in the heat, Do I hold out hoping the bergers re appear and hope they perform as the ones that were from an early run( Have herd dome scary reports), only it is just before elk season before they arrive and I realize accuracy is skewd ,or sellect another 300 gr slug like the cc I have 50 hornady 285 grain hpbt , do you have any exp with this bullet on target or game?

Why not just order some of the Berger 300 Gr OTM bullets. That is what I use in my 338 Lapua and it has shot 1/2 MOA out to 1k so far. There have been a few people on here that have taken quite a few animals with them to include elk and deer. You can order the bullets from Brunos Shooting Supply. They are pretty much the same bullet but have a thicker jacket.

There is much truth to the old saying, "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" Be cautious with changing a load producing proven results and confidence. The time it takes to develop a new load may be the same time for bullets to hit the market. Fingers crossed. As stated, there are OTMs available now with only a jacket thickness difference to the ones you currently use. I used the OTMs last year assisting hunters on three elk and three deer with an average distance over 800 yards. No problem putting the animals down. My .02 says stay with the Berger 300, either one.

These bullets are an unrecognized gem. I got some loaded ammo the Nosler match stuff with this bullet in it because it was cheap ($69/20 in Nosler brass) and I had not gotten my brass from midway to start reloading yet. This was last week. The factory stuff did five shot groups just over 1/2 MOA out of my brand new DTA SRS in 338LM at about 2750 FPS and no break in! So I found some bullets locally and tried them alongside the SMK and the Bergers today and my reloads are UNDER 1/2 MOA five shot groups and that smokes both the Bergers which shoot like crap and the SMK which shot better but not like the Noslers. Chrono says 2750 with 92 Retumbo and NO pressure signs, but with BC .80, the 800 yard gong says they're going 2850.

These bullets are worth a shot especially if you're shooting a DTA SRS and if you have a stockpile of Retumbo. Indeed I bet after they're discovered they're gonna be REALLY popular.

Interesting. I picked up a hundred for my RUM. I asked about these last week with no response. I'm happy to see a positive report. So you've actually verified the .800 BC? I was figuring it would be nearly the same as the SMK due to the identical sectional density.

I can't figure out why Shooter is calling for 18 MOA at 800 yards and takes only 16.25 MOA to get there. I have checked all the atmospherics and everythign is programmed in correctly. I have not had this problem at this same target/range with several other calibers. I find that my Chrono gives 100 fps different velocities depending how high over the sensors I shoot. So the 2750 FPS I'm getting may actually be 2850 but that seems high for a 338LM without any pressure signs. In any case, I think .8 is right, certainly not lower than that. I'm going to the 1000 yard range this week I'll report back after that with more information.

The Nosler bullet measures 1.725" whereas the SMK is 1.70 inches so it is not an exact duplicate of the SMK and the From Factor is probably different accounting for the different BC with the same SD.

The thing that sold me was the one hole groups with very small velocity standard deviation the first load I tried. Plus I kinda knew going in it was gonna be a winner because of the factory ammo I had shot in this gun.

FYI - the factory ammo has 98.5 grains of something in it with a claimed velocity of 2650. I was getting faster than that like 2700. The Nosler website lists RE33 as the most accurate powder tested and the max load was 98 grains. I thus infer that they're loading the factory ammo with RE33. The powder was NOT Retumbo, it had fatter longer extruded granules with a darker dark charcoal gray color.

Plus at $45/100, they're HALF the price of the SMK and the Bergers.

We tried them in 30 cal and they didn't shoot near as good as the Berger at 1000 yards. The Drops also didn't conform with the velocity. In the 338 we didn't try them. But we shot the Berger and Sierra in both the 338 Lapua IMP and the 338 Lapua. The berger was flatter in both and shot smaller groups. The Sierra in my IMP shot 7 to 8 inch groups and the Berger shot 4 to 5 inch groups. The Berger going 100 feet slower then the Sierra still shot higher on the target. Seemed the BC numbers were pretty close on the Sierra and the Berger. Matt

berger 300 otm, cant go wrong. its accurate, thick jacket .818 BC winner of a bullet.

and although berger says dont use them for hunting, i would say they would work fine.
The bullets do expand eventually, just takes a foot or so before it opens up. or so it seems.

"Plus at $45/100, they're HALF the price of the SMK and the Bergers."

This is also true. Berger 300 otms are a dollar a round. $100/100 or $350/500 at wholesale sports ( big hunting store)

but if your willing to pay the extra 50 cents a round, i would go for the 300s just for the sake of having the most accurate round.
