Ar-10 MEGA BUILD

Thinking out side the box for this one. 500 to 1000yard range for large game hunting. 24" to 26"inch match barrel. caliber considerations .338 fed,7mm-08 maybe some others . need to know what will fit in a standard 10 round ar-10 mag and give me the best accuracy and knock down power. any info would be helpful. thanks

My friend built a long distance thumper on the ar10 platform. He chambered his in .300 wsm and has had great results. Might be something to look into.

I thought about build a mega, they look very nice, maybe next time. If your going for distance you should look into the Aadmount for a scope mount. I got one last week (You can find it in this AR15/10 Rifle thread somewhere). Anyway I was truly impressed. For longer ranges as you are talking about you don't want a cheap scope mount.

My 300 SAUM has sent 210s VLDs at about 2900fps, but I'm currently shooting the 190 VLDs at around 2915-2920 from a 24" 1:10 twist.
You'll need someone like Accuracy Systems out of Colorado to do the build for you, otherwise you're going to have serious issues sourcing a bolt to use.

I've taken mine out to a mile on sub MOA steel plates.
I'm also running an AADMOUNT and would agree that it's an awesome optic mount, but I don't believe that in a semi-auto platform, recoil is ever an issue unless you're using pure junk.
Recoil on a bolt action is 10x more violent than with a semi auto, but that doesn't mean you should cut corners on your optics or mounts.

I'll post pics of my new Mega Arms Maten in 6.5 Creedmoor. I saw a large frame AR build series on SnipersHide and got interested in Mega's billet monolithic uppers. So when I found one for sale it was a no brainer.

I need to get some glass mounted on it and get it out on some warm targets but I have way to many projects going right now.

I'll post more when I've got a range report.

Standard BCG from Armalite and I did upgrade to a Tubbs Flat recoil spring, but only because I don't think it's as noisy. I'm not 100% sure if it makes any difference in reliability.
The adjustable gas system is more important. The Armalite upper has the gas port an extra 1/4" away...to help keep it from getting over gassed. The adjustable gas port helps to tune it even more, especially when running suppressed.

Mine is a factory Armalite upper that I customized to suit. The BCG is factory Armalite.

As far as I know...Accuracy Systems is the only one that still has bolts left from the time when DPMS and Armalite were doing builds. SHOT 2011 had a POF that was using a .532 bolt, but that's not come to age yet. Kies Guns was working on a magnum AR10 as well, but that's been 2 years now.

The bag around my neck is the Alaska Guide Creations Bino Pack. The previous version had an uncomfortable neck strap so I swapped it out for one that rode more on the shoulders.
Jarret Owens has since redesigned the strap and it's an amazing piece of gear. I never head to the field without it.

I get the advertising thing but a review on a pice of equipment should be fine, I would do it then submit it to Len as an artical for everyone to read. Thanks for the info, I guess I was assuming you where speaking of BCG for 308 based rounds.

No chit?! That's odd, I've watched most (if not all) of your videos. I don't recall anything resembing an advertisement, just a couple guys that like to shoot coyotes & the gear they use to do it. I don't remember Oneil Ops offering to sell anything.... Len's House & Len's rules I guess, whether they make sense or not.

Good shooting with that 300 BTW, 930 is a heck of a poke & to do it with a semi is far from normal ('round here anyway). I've been eyeing that bino-bag since hearing about it in one of your you-tube vids. How comfortable is it while prone?

Best part about it is the QD fastex buckles. What I like to do is pop the bottom two buckles and either wrap my off arm around it like a cushion, or sometimes (depending on the weapon I'm running) I'll use it as a rear bag. It's got plenty of padding that I'm not worried about hurting it or whats inside.
If you want to keep it on, instead of unhooking the buckles...you can just lift it higher up toward your chin and it's money.
