Hi everyone!

Just got the news that I pulled a unit 13 New Mexico tag. I've never shot a muzzleloader before, but I ordered one from Gunwerks. Thought I'd start out in style...though I may need to find a second job! I was so impressed with my rifle that I figured their muzzleloaders must be awesome also. Does anyone know much about unit 13? I hear it is high desert. Not a lot of elk, but some big boys roaming around. I sure hope that I run into one!

Good luck to all on your upcoming hunts:)

Congrats!!! I'll be n 6B. U will still have them in the rut!! Look for water. I'll look at 13 and see if I know anything around

I have hunted that unit a few times... There are some monsters in there... I would look around Datil or Magdalena... That RMEF property was sold a few years ago so it will be hit and miss. You can't really hunt close to 15 or 16 because it is separated by the plains...

Good clarification. My point is "there be NO monsters on the east side."

Which hunt did you pull unit 13 for? My daughter and I are going the second one of Oct. 19th-23rd. One place to look at is N. of Magdalena on FR 10. It will take you in on the E. side of the Double H ranch. The ranch is well marked with locked gates so you know where forest land is. This area is about 8500 ft elevation and pine forest with steep canyons. The herds will be small 10-15 animals is what I have seen and I haven't seen any monsters like the Gila is famous for but you might get lucky if one comes off the ranch to forest land. I will warn you the turn off to FR 10 looks like somebody's house turn off so is easy to miss. If you go N. out of Magdalena more than five miles and hit the big wash you missed it. Last time I was in there there was a sandy wash about a mile east of the ranch that I almost could not get back through in four wheel drive due to the deep loose sand. Let air out of tires to about 10 lbs and walked across it. Hope this helps and maybe will run into you if we have the same hunt.

I will be there at the same time....2nd season mz. I am going with an outfitter, but he doesn't have access to any private ranches. I am going to try and get off of work 4 or 5 days early and head out there. Take a looksy for myself. Thank you all for the responses. Gives me some homework to do. Sure would be be nice to locate a shooter on my own. I'm more of a DIY type of guy, but out of state scouting isn't easy while running your own business AND having a young family at home. I am going to give it my best shot at taking off a few extra days. Would be fun to tell the guide which direction to go for a change!:)

Good Luck to You. Hope you have better luck than my deer hunt in Unit 13 a few years ago. I went in scouting the day before season opened to a new area and saw two big mulies @ 50 yards. Next morning all the road hunters chased them over the fence into the Bosque Del Apache wildlife refuge before sunrise. Where they stayed all week and nobody got a shot at them. So when you find the big one, make sure season is open!

By the way if you don't know I live in Los Lunas so unit 13 is basically my back yard. 90 miles as the crow flies to my elk hunting area, 120 miles by road. In the summer I can watch the weather over there from my house and pray the rain is hitting the right spot. I will do some scouting and keep you up to date on what I find. Send me a PM with the rough general idea of where you will be hunting, if you know, and I will send scouting reports if I am in that area. With your guide you should have fun.

Good info, thx for posting guys... I have the sept 1 archery hunt & lookin forward to it. Hope to find something to shoot. I hear the hunt Ihave is a little tough
