I recently purchased a nightforce scope. On the underside it reads "made in china". I was under the impression they were american made. Whats up????

EDITED BY LEN BACKUS, PUBLISHER
If you read further down the thread you will see this "China" idea was disproved.

Just spoke with a friend that purchased his nightforce from cabelas. His has "made in Japan" stamped underneath at the eyepiece. Mine may say Japan also, I was thinking it said china. Find out when I get back home and can look at it again. Thanks for the responses guys.

Friend of mine living in Idaho is a retired LtCol and was more than disappointed when he received his Nightforce and saw "made in Japan" on the tube. We had both thought they were "made" in Orofino, Idaho where the company is located. So I bought a Leupold instead. They really are made in America.

Sorry very few leupolds are made in the USA anymore, some of the high end stuff is but the vx1 and vx-II line were outsourced years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if more of it has been since I quit carrying them 4 years ago.

Very few optics are made in the USA period. I doubt you'll see "Made in the USA on many if any Leupold scopes these days"

Here's a Leupold CS response the question in another forum.

There are somecomponents in our scopes that we acquire from a variety of vendors bothdomestic and foreign. Due to this fact, current import/exportregulations do not permit us to put "made in USA" on the scope tubes.

I am quite happy with my NF Scopes and anytime I have a had a question or needed some help NF CS has always come through in a timely, helpful and friendly manner,

Some of our optics are engraved with "Made in USA" while others are engraved with "Made in Japan." The country of origin for the source of the primary core components of the optics requires the appropriate "Made in" designation.
We have worked with the premier Japanese firm since our earliest days, as they have proven time and again to be industry leaders in optical design and manufacturing. It has always been the Nightforce Optics goal to build and offer the best optics in the world. With that said, all of the final assembly and quality assurance testing to guarantee Nightforce Optics standards is conducted at our factory in Orofino, Idaho. All service, modifications and warranty work is performed in our Idaho facility as well.

If true, that's shocking, considering all the advertising that Leupold puts into "made in America"...hard to believe they could get away with that. Is ANYTHING still really made in America these days?????

I thought it was just the glass? What about US Optics?

Here is a good interview. At time 15 - 17:30 the Owner of US optics talks about where US Optics are made. A percentage is made overseas, he doesn't say what percentage or where.

In the end here, you still have a Leupold instead of a Nightforce. I'm no scope expert, but I can tell you my experience has been that NF is the better scope. The NF scopes I have used had precise, repeatable, and accurate turrets... not so with my limited Leupold experience. Now, this may not matter if you don't twist turrets to compensate for windage and elevation, but I do and it makes the difference between hitting my target and just getting frustrated.
As for glass, to my eyes the NF is at least as good. The only thing I have used that is better is my S&B, but that is a different class of scope.
