30-06 ackley improved load data

I'm getting ready to start loading for a 30-06AI and was looking for some data on where to start. I'm planning on trying to shot 165 grain bullets in it. Any info would be helpful.

What will be your starting overall cartridge length? Bullet seating depth makes a big difference as to practical/safe case capacity. Standardized length (SAAMI) for an factory 30-06 is 3.340" but as the Ackley Improved is non-standard you can throat and load any length that will seat in your mag box, feed in your action, and still allow the bullet to be seated in the case neck. I'm hesitant to make recommendations unless I'm comfortable that one receiving them understands these ramifications. My 30-06AI loads in 165 grain are 3.365" which is 20 thousandths of the lands of my rifle. What is your maximum length and what will OAL will you start out with?

not sure yet still waiting on the rifle to be delivered. i was just trying to get a ideal of whats being used in this caliber. it will probaly be up in the summer before i actually start working on a load. mostly just trying to get a feel of what to start with.

Im working on a 25-06AI and once I ever get all my casings fireformed....*sigh*....Im going to start with "straight" 25-06 reloading info and work up. Ive gleaned some data from websites...etc...but I need to start LOW and come up.

You're very close to "over capacity" in a standard 25-06 - my advice (respectfully) would be to step up to heavier and longer bullets - that's where the AI chamber will really perform for you

It may take little more time but I like to start with parent case and if you have any prior loading experience with the 30-06 that would be a big help. I didn't do the 30-06AI but did the 30x280AI and I use 30-06 loading data.


The start load give me a good base on velocity on up to max load. I did try 5 powders in the 30-x280AI with 165gr bullet my best result were with H-4350 followed by IMR-4350,R-19 other two were pretty slow.

I have pretty good gunsmith that does my work never had a problem getting the accuracy I want and I always send along couple dummy rd for throating. My barrel length was 26" long.

I never did hunt with rifle good project for me.

My best velocity was with 59.8 grains of IMR 4350 - avg velocity has been 3045fps
Next best was 61.5 grains of Reloader 19 - avg velocity 3010 fps
In both loads, I stopped when I got acceptable accuracy - there were no indications of excess pressure with either load in my rifle.

UNDERSTAND THAT MY ROUNDS ARE SEATED 25 THOUSANDTHS LONGER THAN THE NORMAL 3.340". IF YOU USE EITHER OF THESE LOADS IN CASES WITH BULLETS SEATED SHORTER, YOU WILL GET UNSAFE HIGH PRESSURES.

Were pretty close in my 30-280AI 59gr/IMR-4350 with 165gr Speers @ 3013fps and 60gr/IMR-4350 @ 3074fps. I max out at 62gr/IMR-4350 @ 3148fps which is 2gr over Hodgdon data I was using for the 30-06.
