Just bought a savage weather warrior in 6.5x284 norma. I want to hunt antelope and deer at long range. What ammo should i shoot and what scope do you suggest?

My load is 57.5gr retumbo 2.915 oal 142 Sierra match king with a win mag primer. It shoots about .300" group at 2980 fps. Also I put a vortex viper hs lr 4-16 x 44 scope on my rifle. It is a great little pack gun.

My load is 129gr hornady SST with 54.5 gr of accurate 3100 at 3140fps shoots tiny little groups with a nikon buckmaster 6-18 with BDC.My rifle is a savage LRH.

In my Savage LRH, I use 140 Hunting Berger VLD's loaded to 2975 FPS with 57.5 gr. Retumbo, Fed 215 primers, Lapua brass. Seating may vary but .075" off the lands has worked well with a few Savage owners I know using this load. If you don't reload, you can by semi custom loads similiar to this one from HSM or BOTW. This load is good for deer/antelope out to 1000 yards or so and is generally very accurate in the Savage. Lots of good scopes depending on your budget. I like the Huskemaw 5x20, Nightforce NXS, or Leupold Mk4.

Great replys guys thanks a bunch! Ive been a reader for a while and so glad i joined up!!! Im really liking the vortex hd series of scopes and the leupold mark 4 lrt at well. Im a reloader but a newby so thanks for sharing your secrets as well. Anymore info would be great!

I have the same gun and cant break over 2800. Im shooting h1000 right now. I might have to luck into some retumbo.

You should. In my experience H1000 is not the best powder for getting max velocity out of the 6.5x284. H4831sc can generate about 2950FPS and Retumbo, around 50FPS faster with the 24" Savage barrel and 140VLD's. Both powders are capable of excellent accuracy.

I think superformance can be added in too. Got similar velocities to retumbo. Jury out still on accuracy and temp stability. I seated my bullets deeper to see what would happen. It was not scientific as I had very limited time. Turned the die plunger in and seated a bullet. Measured it, did another, shot them both. They were touching at 200. .105 off the lands wound up being the number. 2.477 OAL. Seems like I finally have this savage shooting .25 MOA at 200.

48 grains super landed in the same vertical plane as 56.5 retumbo for me.

My rifle seems to be ok with retumbo at 56.5 vs 57.5 in the warmer temps and still produces results in the 2970 range. I shot from 200 to 1200 Sunday and solutions were based on 2970 fps. Impacts were within .25MOA of solution.

If you can track down some RL 17, try a starting load around 47 gr. under a Berger 140 gr. hunting VLD. Light it with Fed 210M primer. Groups should tighten up as you increase the powder charge to a max for your rifle. Very accurate @ 3,000 fps in my 6.5-284. YMMV

Its tough right now to find any kind of powder. any suggestions on where to find some Retumbo? hopefully this stuff with congress will help cycle through some supplies into the stores
