Summer hunting

I live in east Texas with no closed season for coyotes. I have only hunted them from late fall until early spring, but what about the summer? Have anybody of you had luck in the summer or is it a waste of time?

Lots of cover. Not to interested in food as there is food everwhere. The only thing you have to entise them is territory.

I do alot of coyote hunting in the summer. I find good vantage points and glass for them. Where I hunt them this works well. Not sure if they are hunting or just wondering around but they seem to move more in the summer months.

I hunt coyotes year round and it seems that dogs in my area come in faster and easier during summer months. My guess is that it's a result of less pressure and new pups getting out. Fur is nothing to get excited about in the hotter months though.

Summer can be great coyote hunting/calling! Get a Catahoula Cur for a decoy dog. You can be shooting coyotes screaming at you from 30 feet. I hunt, trap and snare all year long.

I hunt coyotes year' round. I do sometimes take July off, but it's not because I can't call them in then. It's because of all the rattle snakes, mosquitos, black flies, gnats, ants, and other little no-see'ums that feast on a guy while trying make a stand. Real hard to hold still with critters crawling all over you and biting. Hate it. On the ocassional cool day when temps drop down into the 50's. If there is no to little wind I will run out there and try to trick a couple into poking their noses out for a looky-see.

Here are a few summer yotes.

First up a double that I killed at around 5300 feet on a cool summer day.

This one I howled in the evening before while trying to locate for the next day. Unfortunately I did not have a gun with me and just had to watch helplessly as the coyote milled around in front of me at 200 yards. Went back in the next day and called her right in. I had my daughter along as I had a pretty good idea this aggressive coyote was going to cooperate. She came charging into a jackrabbit sound the following evening. I wish all plans worked this well.

Got this last one just minutes before a heavy duty thunder storm rolled in. I literally ran back to my pick up. Jumped inside and even before I could start the pick up engine the first rain drops hit the windshield. It quickly turned into a major nasty storm. I couldn't have been more lucky or timed it any better. Man, I'm glad I wasn't running back to the truck when the lightening started up. Running in a lightening storm with an AR strapped to my back is not my idea of a good time!

If you're ADC i can see a guy buying a dog just to hunt coyotes during the summer. If you're not, then it's a waste of food because come fall, a dog is to much. They won't come into a bigger animal expecially pups, which is 70% of what's out there in the fall. That's like going to playground with a bully there, who would want to deal with that, unless you're the bully. Winter doesn't help draw in coyotes with a dog either. The only time of year that a dog is useful is to kill adult coyotes who are territorial due to dens or pups.

I agree with the bugs and heat, it just plain sucks. Then you have the heat, a coyote isn't going to be running around in 90+ degrees, they're smarter then that, they head for the shade. So you're left with mornings and evenings.

Fur sucks, so no resale on that, you're basically doing it for your own good.

You know what guy, Maybe I just like dogs. My wife & I have 3 Catahoula Curs that go everywhere and do everything with us. They are expensive and **** well worth it. Don't get the bully thing either. Pull your head out & get the chip off your shoulder. Oh, by the way. I do a little bear hunting with them as well.

Catahoula, hope you can retire in Bozeman some day. It's absolutely beautiful down there. As for the dogs I have several friends that use them year round. I understand why they would be more effective in the spring because of territorial behaviors, but I'm not positive they scare off everything in the fall and winter. However, I don't hunt coyotes over dogs so I'm no expert. However, I do kill the heck out of them year' round so I'm not clueless either.

Im not saying that dogs dont work. Im saying dont work well on pups during the spring summer and fall on pups. Yes a dog will work wonders on adult coyotes during those time. But just to buy a dog to hunt coyotes during the summer is stupid. I hate pushing a dog on a guy who isnt going to use it to its full potential. Little background i run curs also. Coyotes even adult coyotes will shy away from large agressive dogs. This is what im gettiing at with the bully bit.

Bowfisher, I pretty much only hunt coyotes in the summer when a rancher calls up and requests it. Got to keep the land owners happy so I can get after critters the rest of the year on their land. I don't think I've ever shot a coyote on public land during the summer. I may have when I was young, but I sure can't recall doing so.

Guy has to protect his hunting ground, that's a fact. I'm sure it makes you cringe a little when you have to take out summer yotes with fur prices getting good again. Not to mention, y'all got really nice yotes out there!
