OK, give me your best shots here. JUst had two disks taken out of the neck and looking at back surgery later this year. BTW, 1000+ jumps, 24 years in SF, 2 parachute accidents, three broken vertabrae will catch up with you at age 60 in case you 20 yr olds do not believe that. What you walk away from at 20 will bite you in the *** later.

Looks like I may have to give up heavy recoiling large caliber rifles and shotguns.

I have a super nice 6.5x47 in a Bobby Harts LR stock that I shoot steel mtaches with that I can transfer to a hunting style stock or just build something. It smokes with 130 berger huting bullets. Nice NXS 8x32 NF sets on it.

Stopped by Sierra last week in Sedalia, MO and Rich Machholz. recommended their100 SBT for my 25-06 instead of the 117-120s I have been shooting. BTW, their outlet store has everything in stock except 357, 9mm and some 223. go figure why. Bought $1000 of bullets for myself and friend. They are seconds and must be sorted and weighed, but 1/3 the cost AND available. If you are ever by there, it is worth the stop.

Just heads up, I may have to sell a super 338 Lapua AI that is a smoker, 308 tactical and a 300 WSM light weight hunting rifle later, depending on what the doc says. Hell, even 10x14 davis wall tent and stove. Tons of brass, ammo and custom dies for all three.

Due to back and neck, so no longer can backpack or carry one even. Injuries and old age suck!gun)

So who has a light recoiling LR cartridge (for now 600-800) for large whitetail other than the 6.5x47? I have the reamer for this one.

Also, looking at the savage lightweight hunter in 7mm-08 with 120 BTips for 300 and under.

Let's hear it.

Most guys are broke at 50 jumps, did they give you the little gel replacement disks or did they fuse them, what numbers? Have you considered sticking with the round, cutting some weight from the rig and adding a break? Just some thoughts hope you feel better, you have some years on me and I already hurt.

they did the replacement on two lower neck disks 4 and 5 with bone chips that are "supposed" fuse along with a titanium plate. We will see how it goes. Plus looking at possibly same in lower back later this year.

My 338 already is braked, but when one sharp jolt (much less repeated ones) could put you in a wheelchair, makes you think. about what caliber you really need. Not a wheelchair kind of guy, always kept one taped to my dogtag.

I get it man don't risk it, I was thinking you could brake the 6.5x47

You won't get much from going to a 260 Rem from a 6.5X47, so the next logical step is to the 6.5X55< 6.5-284Norma< 6.5 rem mag< 6.5WSM< 264WM. If you shoot the 123 grain SST out of these you would have less recoil than the 140 grain bullets. Add good muzzle break and it should shoot like a 223-243

Nothing to do with spotters. Learn to bring your own gun and learn to read a data card and
make sure it is on the gun.

Geez a myriad of mistakes by young whipper snappers who think they know it all and then try to bust on their elders.

Sorry to hear about your spine. No fun. I have a 6.5-06 and it is very pleasant to shoot. Seems to have less recoil than my 25-06. About any of the 6.5's are going to get er done for you. A lot of guys use them on elk. A GOOD brake and the recoil should be pretty minimal. Or try the 7mm-08 or .308. Good breaks and the recoil should be very light. Shot a friends 7mm-08 a few years ago and couldn't believe how light the recoil is. I don't think that you drop that much recoil by going to the .24 calibers. If it was me I'd likely just restock the 6.5X47 and use it, at least to start with. See how the next surgery goes and how you feel in a year or so. Best of luck to you. Bruce

I would lean towards a 6.5x284/6.5x06. My 10.5# braked 6.5x284 has the felt recoil of a 22-250, has excellent accuracy, and will flatten medium sized game out to1000 yards with a 140VLD at 2970FPS.IMO
