Convince dad he doesn't need a 10-40x56 for AR-10 Carbine...

He tells me that he is looking to pick up an AR-10 from a friend, and is looking to put an AIM Sports 10-40x56 for $100 on it because he wants to use it for praire dogs. I told him I have a Mueller 8.5-25, and a BSA 8-32 that he can use, but he is set on it.

Do you just let them do what they want, or do you try to reason with them?

I've watched my old man spend money on alot of crap vehicles and crappy investments over the years. One thing I've learned is that no matter how much you preach to them, they're gonna do what they're gonna do. He earned his money, let him buy what he wants. LOL

There are several good reasons to put a big heavy scope on an AR-10.

The Prairie dogs are less likely to see the shooter hidden behind the big objective lens.

The weight will reduce felt recoil considerably.

That much material between the muzzle and the hooters ears will reduce muzzle blast noticeably.

Maybe his eyesight has gone to hell and he NEEDS a 40x scope to be able to determine if the critter he's about to shoot is a prairie dog or his neighbor's Dachshund.

I should talk about big heavy Asian scopes. I have a Horus Falcon on my 6.5 Creedmoor AR-10

My dad bought me some DUMB crap that I wanted (neeeeeded) when I was a kid. Quite a bit of it. With his $.

You should buy that scope for him just to see how he felt, hundreds of times, for 18 years!!

My folks are gettin up there and make some weird decisions. I am less bummed with the minor consequences and more bummed that they are aging/slipping.

I can't help. I tell mine to avoid a certain model because it does not fit his needs and is not his best choice.
He says he wants one so I tell him to save up and I'll help him find a good one when he has (X) amount saved and in the mean time research these and ovoid that one. He calls a week later and says he has that one I warned him about on layaway. You payed how much? (ouch) how you paying that much on your income? Over time, whatever. Calls two weeks later and says he blew his whole months money getting it out and can't afford to shoot it or eat and now needs help fixing stuff that aint broke, changing stuff that should not be changed, etc.etc. Then he fiddles, grinds and polishes on it till it quits working and then calls for help.
I swear I just had to quit talking about it with him. Quit giving advise and quit listening to the plan that he never follows anyway.
Now my brother calls and says "you will not believe what he did to that rifle it will break your heart" STOP, STOP ,Stop I do not want to know...............HE CUT WHAT OFF? ARRRR

first if all i had to spend on a scope was a 100 bucks i probably wouldnt have been able to aford an ar10. If hes stuck on a 100 dollar scope get the best 3x9 he can buy for that ammount used. Personaly i wouldnt put any of those choises on my ar10.

I am with VarmitH8tr. Buy the scope and make sure it is mounted correctly and take him to the range to sight it in. Enjoy the day together. Atleast you will be out together shooting. When he decides he needs something better put it back in the box and sell it for $50 at the next gun show.

Agreed. Or just stick on a .22 or .17HMR after he gets something better. That's what I do. When I buy something nicer for one of my centerfire's, it goes down the chain a notch. If I replaced my Zeiss on my Sendero with a NF, the Zeiss gets put on the Browning, the Kahles on the Browning gets put on something else, etc, etc....

Well my dad is a minimalist. He's had the same no name 25 dollar Japanese scope on his Winchester model 94 since 1978. He's killed plenty of deer with it and sees no reason to change it but when I put one of my Mark AR's, my Viper PST or my Weaver classic next to him he's just amazed at how clear they are. That's why over the past few years I've slowly been replacing his scopes with some Nikon Monarchs. They make great gifts and he's amazed at how well he can see even though his vision is declining. Nonetheless, If he wants to buy that scope let him, get some range time with him, and enjoy.

My dad is the same way... I had to literally "steal" his old 70's Marlin .30-30 and remove the old Galaxy scope that was on it when he bought it (in the 70's), and put a Tasco EXP (high-end Tasco) that I had sitting around the safe, on it. That Galaxy scope was so old and cheap that all the nitrogen had escaped it, and it would fog up as soon as you pulled it out of the truck on a cool day. LOL He would also still shoot his antique boxes of Remington Core-Lokt SP ammo for it, even though I bought him 4 boxes of Hornady LeverEvolution and sighted it in for him.... You can't fix old school mentality. I've learned that over the years.

I had to remove one of the Simmons Aetec scopes off his 7Mag and put one of mine (Nitrex) on top of it, b/c the recoil was knocking the cross-hairs out after every shot. He said, "Thanks, but that was unnecessary....It's not like I ever shoot it, anyway..." I just had to shake my head, laugh, and walk off on that one. Try to do right after all these years, from him buying me all the gun stuff I wanted, and he just shrugs it off....But that's just his way. I know he appreciates it, but sometimes it seems impossible to help the man out, b/c he's so hard-headed, stubborn, and set in his ways.
