thinkin about selling my 06' if anyone is interested.gun shoots awesome but i need funds for new projects.make an offer on gun minus scope and rings.does come with egw 1 pc picatiny rail and bipod.

i broke it in with 168 smk's and 52.5 grns of h4350. just bought some 168 bergers . it will only get better the more i shoot it.
Awesome, how much freebore? I am going with about .270 in mine because i plan to shoot the 195 berger for fun around the 1800 yard mark, but am going to use the 162 A-Max as my primary bullet for deer and antelope out to 1k, and the 168 barnes LRX for elk out to 600 yards. It will be built off a savage LA weather warrior and a Brux 24" 1:8 twist. How much does your 284 win weigh in at?

the criterion is throated for 180 bergers. i'm hoping to find some 162 amaxes myself for steel. my rig as seen in the pic weighs exactly 15lbs. definetly have ur barrel made longer than 24". u won't get to take full advantage of the .284 without at least a 28" barrel.

i am wanting a 24" barrel to keep the weight down, it is a #4 contour non fluted, i am considering having the smith chop it down to 25 or 26" though for a little more velocity.

go at least 26". don't have that much freebore cut in the throat,u'll never get the a max's to shoot with that much freebore.i believe mine is at .200 and it is actually too much for the 168's already.

I just sent the smith an email letting him know i would like to go 26", thanks for that, but i disagree about the freebore, i sent him a dummy round with the A-Max at about .270 freebore and the boattail shank junction is above the neck/shoulder junction of the case by about .050 i believe. I have plenty of the bullet in the case.

well if you want to be .010 off the lands don't go any more than .174 freebore. i have my 168 smk's set at the top of the boat tail even with the shoulder neck junction and i'm about .065 from the lands.

i dont have the book in front of me right know but i should tomorrow but applied ballistics by bryan litz lists all the bearing surface measurements of popular 7mm bullets and i will check what the 168 smk, and 162 A-Max are and report back here.
take care,

168 grain smk: Bearing surface is .460
168 berger VLD: bearing surface is .462
162 grain Hornady A-Max: bearing surface is .470
195 berger EOL: bearing surfacd is .502.

the neck length of the 284 win is .280 when trimmed .005 short of maximum. so .470 - .280= .190" which is the lowest amount of freebore wanted for the A-Max, so .270 freebore will still leave .200" of bullet in the case when touching the lands, which is still plenty of bullet when the case neck is only .280.

.502 - .280= .222 freebore as minimum for the 195 EOL, so at .270, i will still be able to move the bullet .048 off the lands and still not hit the donut in the case neck.

i think ur screwing yourself with that much freebore but what do i know? i can tell you that if i set a 168 smk to .010 off the lands i only had about .150 of the ogive in the neck ,and thats not enough to control the bullet upon ignition, and my freebore is suppossed to be .200.

If you give me the COAL from base to bullet tip with the 168 smk i can give you an estimate of what the free bore in your barrel is.
