.1 mil or .25 moa, which is best for long range precision shooting?

Hey guys. I'm currently running a millett LRS-1 6-25/56 .25 moa scope on my current .338 win mag remington 700 Sendero. My new barrel should be in within the next two weeks from rock creek to build my new .338 edge off my 700 receiver. I will be purchasing the new nightforce ATACR or B.E.A.S.T. To ride atop it when finished and was wondering if I should order the .1 mil version or the .25 moa version. I like the new velocity 1000 reticle they are offering in it. Very similar to the Horus! I will be running nightforce's ballistic program on PDA and another ballistic program on my iPhone and was wondering what is the best for long range precision shooting? Not just long range hunting as I may compete in some long range sniper competitions with it at some point. I will also be using a leupold mark 4 20-60/80 spotter with mild-dot reticle in first focal plane if this makes a difference. Thanks guys.

It simply depends on what you prefer, are use to and understand best. Also what you intend to use in your ballistic program.

For me it will always be MOA. I simply relate better to 4 quarters make a dollar, 4 quarters also make 1 moa. or anything for that matter. And the fact that 1 moa at 100 yards is ( for all practical purposes) 1 inch, 1 moa at 200 yards is 2" , 1 moa at 300 yards is 3" and so on, is just simpler to me.

It doesn't really matter as long as you learn that system. I can understand MOA better for the reasons listed above and because that is how I learned. It would be nice to have the scope match the spotting scope. Moa is slightly finer than a mil scope, .1 mil being around 1/3 moa, so not much difference.

Two ways you could look at it.

Because your spotter is in mil i would go that route. Just easier to dial what you see (or rather what you spotter sees) rather than convert.

MOA is a little finer than mil and in my opinion the math is easier if ranging. How ever if you are rocking a laser rangefinder then not a big deal.

*just my opinion but I make sure my reticle and turret match rather than getting wrapped up in mil vs moa for dynamic shooting.

Yes for right now I am fielding the Bushnell elite 1500 LRF until I can afford a vectronix or the new LRF advertised and sold on here that automatically accounts for conditions. I'm also currently running a kestrel nv4000. And I'm very familiar with mils and I know if I can consistently shoot 1 moa accurately at 100 I can accurately shoot a deer at 1,000 accounting for conditions properly. A deer's vital area is comprised of a ten inch circle. A ten inch circle at 1,000 yards is a 1 moa sized target, BUT as you said if my spotter spots a miss and gives me the corrections either in holdover or dialing it it would be in mils which is on the same playing field which enable a MUCH faster follow-up shot! Also are .1mil knobs faster to dial a solution than .25moa? It look like they would be cuz there would be no counting involved. If you needed 3 mil on the gun instead of counting 30 clicks just run it to 3 steady your aim hold your breath and squeeze, BANG! Where as with moa you would have to convert then adjust. Also if the program said I need 4 moa correction just run it to 4 at 100 yards same as you would in mils BUT past a 100 everything changes. At 400 each click is 1 moa so if I ran to the number four on my dial I just put in 16 moa correction! Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding of the moa system, this would be correct would it not? Thanks again guys.

Wrong!! I assume you would have a .25 moa scope. Each click would be 1/4 moa.

Number 4 on your turret would be 4 moa. There is no difference in dialing, 1 click is .1mil on a mil turret and 1 click is .25 moa on a moa turret.

I just an hour ago dialed on a coyote at 715 yards. My correction was 12.5 moa. I dialed 1 revolution on a 10 moa turret and then on to 2 1/2 for a 12 1/2 moa dial up. Dead yote.

But I don't see how moa could be consistent that way. Because it grows the further out you go. An moa size target at 100 yards is one inch, an moa size target at 1,000 yards is ten inches! I thought one .25 moa click at 100 yards was one quarter of an inch and one .25 moa click at 200 yards was a half inch then one click at 300 is three quarter of an inch per click then at 400 each .25 moa click on the scope in reality moves bullet impact by one whole inch per click and continues growing at a quarter inch per hundred yards??? This is the way I've learned moa system. At 800 each click moves bullet impact by 2" per click and at 1,000 each click moves bullet impact by 2 1/2" per click. Please guys correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct, but it is the same with Mils. 1 click at 100 / or .1 mil at 100 is .36" with MOA it is .25"

That same click at 1000 yards is 3.6" with mils and 2 1/2" with MOA.

With MOA it is .25 moa per click with Mils it is .1 mil per click.

Quarters or tenths but adjusted the same with mills being a slightly larger unit of measure.

Ok that's what I thought. So a random shooting solution: target is at 700. Scope is .25 moa. Ballistic program shoots out a 15 1/2 moa correction. How many clicks? Each click at seven hundred would be 1 3/4". So would I just dial 15 1/2 on the knobs or is the 15 1/2 moa correction need to be multiplied by 1.75? Am I going too far into this? Surely I'm breaking it down too far?

Like I said in the earlier post. Yesterday I shot a coyote at 715 yards. My ballistic app told me to dial 12.5 moa. My turret on the NXS scope has 10 moa in one revolution. So I dialed 10 ( 1 rev) and on to 2.5 for a total dial up of 12 .5 moa. Forget converting it to clicks. The turrets are numbered in 1 moa increments. Each moa is also broken down in .25 moa's. So as per your above example of 15.5 moa you would dial 15 plus 2 more clicks to be on 15.5

Yes, I think you are taking it too far and making it way more complicated.:)

maybe he should watch the video that gunwerks has on youtube it explains moa pretty good.

i use moa and it is alot easier for me, you are way over thinking it

Go with mils as mentioned earlier. With a mil based spotter it is ment to be.You both read corrections the same. That is how the military does it.For me one rev gets me to over 1000 ,depending on scope.I favor the slightly courser adjustment. 750 for me is 4.5 mil.Which is a easy dead hold on my reticle that goes to 10 mil.

Thanks guys. Any recommendation on nightforce reticles? Both mil based and moa based. What is the best in both?
