I have been wanting to do this for a couple years but not sure who i am willing to let do it and need alittle more info.
Gun is a Rem700 switchbarrel gun that Gordy Gritters worked magic on, its got a 22-250 barrel and .243. Its in an HS Precision stock and I leave the .243 barrel on as my scope has a turret matched to my 95gn Berger VLD's. barrels are factory heavy barrels and both shoot alot better than im capable of.
So can I just unthread my barrel and ship to a smith? Who? (Gordy)? What break? Will it effect my turret setup and overall accuracy? How much does adding a break run? Thanks guys.

So can I just unthread my barrel and ship to a smith? That depends on which muzzle brake you are going to have it installed, radial muzzle brakes (holes all over like vais) do not need to be indexed and you can send just the barrel. Non-radial muzzle brakes like Jim See's muscle brake (Center Shot Rifles - Products / Sales - Muzzle Brakes) or Kirby Allen's painkiller (Home Page) need to be properly indexed and you must send the barreled action.

Who? (Gordy)? You cannot go wrong with any of the site sponsor gunsmiths.

What break? There's plenty of effective muzzle brakes in the market (not a big radial muzzle brake fan), muscle brake, painkiller, Holland's, etc ... are excellent choices.

Will it effect my turret setup and overall accuracy? I don't think it does, if it does it's probably very minute, but I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable will chime in.

How much does adding a break run? It's cost of muzzle brake + installation cost. My local gunsmiths charges $100 for installation

Good luck!

Also is putting a brake on a .243 just rediculous? Or will it make it like a .22 rim fire? I got a very small wife and a daughter who eventually will be shooting this gun and if my daughter turns out anything like my wife I need this thing to be the lightest recoil gun ever. LOL I also would like to see the coyotes eyeballs pop when I shoot em. :D

The going rate is $100 to install a brake plus the cost of the brake. If you put an index mark on the barrel you could just send the barrel. A 243 with a brake is almost recoiless. I would do the 22-250 too. I like brakes on everything.

Hired, how much do the brakes run and is one better then the next?
I dont ever shoot my 22-250 barrel as my scope has a turret matched to my .243 load. I have a Vanguard 22-250 tho. cheap but covered 3 shots with a dime first time out.

For small caliber like .243 you could have Vias or such that isn't indexed and save the trouble if you torque your barrel a little and the brake little all of a sudden your over rotated. Harrels has a spiral hole brake low cost.
Just a suggestion if your shipping your barrel just take the gun out of your stock and ship the barreled action and have it done and indexed without question, because a good sloted brake on a 243 I'm sure would like.

Decisions Decision

I'm partial to my brake of coarse but there are a number of good brakes out there, I would lean toward a side ported just in case you you shoot on the ground off bipod they don't throw dirt up.

The simple CSR brake from by Center Shot Rifles is the one I use the most of. It is very effective. The only one that works any better is the Holland Radial QD brake. No need to ship your whole rifle. Just make an index mark at 6 oclock to let us know which way goes straight down for timing.

Advantage is weight, out on the end of a 26" barrel a few ozs. in a game of trying to save ozs. could be important. Maybe balance the rifle a little better, or maybe not effect the barrel vibrations as much as a heavvier one. 30 degree slanted ports with about braking surface as I can get in a small brake weighing .82 oz for the 3/4" brake.

Thanks for looking.
