So i currently have the rifle pictured in my signature. It is a Remington 700 XCR ii chambered in .270. I would like to trade it in for a more long range capable rifle. (I just have to throw the old stock on and its in mint condition) The stock i have is a Choate tactical stock that is obviously a long action stock.

The store that i am going through has a Remington 700 SPS tactical .308 with a heavy contour 20in barrel but i would not be able to use my old stock (i want to eventually go with the $500 Bell and Carlson A5 stock but right now i dont have the money to buy it)

I could also buy a normal Remington 700 SPS 300win mag with a normal carbon steel barrel. I like the long range capabilities of the 300 win mag and it would also fit my current stock. I would like a heavy barrel though to avoid having to buying a seperate heavy barrel later for added cost.

Im not entirely sure what would be the best choice. I wish they had a Remington 700 SPS long range in 300 win mag. That would be my optimal choice because its the 300 win mag round with a heavy barrel as well.

Any idea what rifle i should choose? I do a lot of deer hunting and would like long range capability (1000+ yards) Either choice im going to have to upgrade either the stock or barrel eventually. The 300 win mag i would likely upgrade the barrel first and later upgrade the stock again.

I just looked at your 2 links it says the 308 is sold pending funds. Did you buy it or did someone make up your mind for you? I would have went with the 300wm any way.:D

Lol i just noticed that too. Looks like 300 win mag it is! Ill see how accurate the factory barrel is and then look into a heavy barrel after i recover from my recent AR-15 build.

Are you set on a Remington? If you are going to change the stock as well, why not look for a Savage in 6.5 x 284 Norma. This would give you the long range capability. I have a 308 which is excellent for the medium ranges circa 600 yards but the bullet drop becomes high at 1000 yards. I am building a custom 6.5 x 284 Norma for the 900 to 1200 yard shots. Barrel wear is greater but how many long range hunting shots will you take in a year?

The reason I said I would go the 300wm route I am picking up a 5R Mil spec in 300WM Friday. Hope it shoots. Now if only I can find some brass.
