So i bought a 338 lapua in a Savage 110 FCP. I want to make it an improved cartridge. I emailed Kirby about reaming mine and he recommended that i build a rifle with a stronger action. I dont have the money at the moment to build a custom rifle, so I would like to work with what i have. What other improved versions are out there? I dont want to buy custom dies, so something off the shelf preferably. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ryan

I read it already. I wanted to use Kirby but couldn't afford his platform. So I guess ai is all that's left. I saw midway sold dies for an improved version. It said something like clymer. Is that the ai version?

If you don't want to buy custom dies maybe you should buy a set of dies and have a reamer ground to match. I think Ackley passed before the 338 Lapua came about.

Looking to get more info on your thoughts on which 338 Lapua Improved version you want to go with. Also, why you don't want to go the custom die route? They don't cost much more than a type S die set from Redding.

What's wrong with the regular 338 Lapua? It is not worth it to me to do all the fireforming and crap for what 100 fps maybe? The regular Lapua is an amazing cartridge.

For me, the AI is more about case life and some possible savings from throat erosion (steep angled shoulder). Any increase in velocity is just icing on the cake. I truely believe the AI is a better design. The typical military design, which most of our hunting calibers come from, is all about ease of extraction in the field and not about efficiency or case life.

I just figured they would cost a buch. I guess i will get back with my gunsmith and ask him what he thinks i sould do.

The 110 fcp action is more than strong enough for a 338 lapua
or larger cal... I own three 110,s ...in 338 lapua and love and
trust the savage action.

i have heard good things about it. i havent heard of anyone blowing one up

I have a 338 AI and runs 300s at 2970 very comfortably.

However, consider the $ for rechambering a "factory barrel"

IF you want to do it. Go to Dave Kiff at PTG and order the Speedy AI reamer $140. That way you can get a set of dies made that will match this chamber and the next chamber as you will own the reamer.

I have Neil Jones dies that are the top of the line $375. However, Forester and Hornady can make custum AI dies also. Just how long it will take is another question.

Rechamber the barrel, break in for 20 shots, super clean and then send the barrel off to be melonited. Cost is $100 with shipping and you will get 2-4x barrel life.
