.25 WSSM rifles

Are there many companies making rifles chambered in this round yet? I haven't seen many advertised. I was looking to buy a cheap sub $1K model varmint type gun with a long barrel, except I can't find any companies that sell any. Does anyone here know of any?

To me, the .25 WSSM looks like a .25/06 that uses the efficiency of the short, wide case advantage to provide .25/06 ballstics with less powder. This should mean slightly less recoil and slightly longer barrel life.

I have read about this cartridge a little. I, for one, think this round might make a great rifle for deer and varmints that would be "user-friendly" towards women and youths.

Lots of advertising, not much shipping. Kinda thinking about one myself. Same situation with the .204. The owner of the shop I usually work with has several of each on order but hasn't seen any guns yet.

Let me share some thoughts on the 25 WSSM that may help in your decision. Our family purchased 3 Winchester Coyote 25 WSSM rifles (1 for my dad, 2 for the boys). These rifles were bought for Christmas, two years ago. After switching scopes (no junk - a Nikon and a Burris target scope) and trying countless powder's and bullet's I am about ready to trade the Coyote of my son's off for another rifle. Two of the three rifles have yet to shoot a group under an inch with any load. Not too good for a heavy barrled rifle like the Coyote. I would not recomend this gun from my experience.

I have worked on several 25 WSSM Coyotes and found the same problem .

After a complete blueprint of the action and a full bedding and floating of the stock
they still did not shoot better than 1" groups.

Using up my last 'ace in the hole' I decided to lap the barrels "BINGO" that did the trick.

What I found was very bad barrels on them ( The bore had tight spots That had to be
lapped out to make them uniform ) .

After lapping accuracy improved to less than 1/2 inch groups.

Note: I only lap after every thing else has not fixed the accuracy .If that does not do
it then it's time for a new barrel.

There appears to be nothing wrong with the 25 WSM cartrige just the rifle ( Coyote ).

However I have not had the same trouble with other WSSM's and WSM's so it may be
just the 25 caliber barrels.

Its hard to come up with a good varmint / deer combo in 25 caliber so I would look at the
243 WSSM for this. Also ammo is more available.

Hear's a compairson.

243 WSSM
Velocity with 100gr bullet 3200 ft/sec avg. ( good for deer ).
85 gr bullet 3350 ft/sec avg.
55 gr bullet 4100 ft/sec avg ( A great varmint round )

25 WSSM
Velocity with 100gr bullet 3275 ft/sec avg. (good for deer ).
85 gr bullet 3500 ft/sec avg. (The smallest that is recimended to shoot in the 25.

rechamber to a 25 Colt. I shoot a 90gr Barnes Solid at 3,650 fps, groups 5/16 at 100 yds and 1 1/4 at 300yds.

is it free floated and glass bedded? i assume not... my friend has a 25 wssm and it shoots sub .5 MOA groups all day long... its not the cartrige. its the gun, it could be the barrel, pretty much all factory barrels are junk, besides savage....

I'm pretty sure you don't mean the tiny pistol cartridge from 1908.

Noticed the 25 wssm brass is just a little hard to find for my 25 wssm Browning.
To get by, I recently bought 100 243 wssm brass from doghouseoutdoors.

Since it's alive I'll toss my .02 in.

The wssm cals. are notorious for not liking max loads. I shoot a 100 sierra with a start charge of H4895 and it's still around 3100 fps at 1/2 moa. With a top charge of Superformance it'll hit 3300 fps with the sierra at 1 moa. A start charge of h4350 with the 120 speer is its best load at about 1/3 moa at 2900 fps.

Hmmmm. Not my experience at all.

I have 2: 25 wssm's so I can't speak for the 22 or 243 wssm.
Both of mine demand max loads or they will soot up the necks of the brass something awful.
Both the Winchester and Browning are accurate with many loads but only loads near max will seal up the
thick neck brass to the chamber.

How does your brass look with these light loads?
