How far would you shoot for clean kill on a deer with 30-06 168 Berger vld 2880 fps shoot a 13inch group at 800 yards consistently has around 1000 pps left at 800 yards
All conditions good

With what you list above I think about 700yds would be my max.

If that's what I were shooting though I'd move up to the 180-190 class bullets and see if you can't get it under 1 MOA so you can take it on out to 1,000dys under ideal conditions.

350 yards MAX, 13" at 800 yards is approx 1.75 MOA.
1.75 MOA at 350 yards is about 6", assuming you can get your first shot within .5 MOA of your POA that is a total of 12" error, approx the same size as a whitetails vitals.

Left to right broad side a WT has about 24-30" of vitals from the back end of the lungs to the mid neck and 18" from the top of the withers to bottom of he brisket.

Make an + at the mid point of the shoulders and figurre then 7" above/below and 12" left/right.

so that moves it out to around 450-475 yards using the same system as below to meet the 18" from back to brisket.

Not 800. Why 13" groups at 800? I'm sure you can do better with some adjustments. Not bashing you or shooting but 1.5+MOA isnt something you have to live with nowadays. A lot of factory guns and premium ammo can do better. I like to be able to do better than that before I pull a trigger. I would figure out what I had to do to bring that down to at least 1MOA and then shoot 800. The bullet has the ooomph, it just needs to hit the spot. Missing an aiming point on a deer by 6.5" is too much. 6.5 can turn into 18 real quick.

Not bashing you at all I just know that you can do better. That would be a better thought than if its good to 800. Is your gun 1.5 MOA at all ranges or just waaay out there?

Not really. 2moa at 600yds is 12", 14 at 700 and about 141/2 at 750.

Center of the 14 1/2 is 7 1/4. Above or below that is a clean miss most of the time it's the left to right that has you spending a lot of time tracking.

Shooter Error plus Low BC light weight thirty cal can easily account for most of that.

That's why I suggested he go to the higher BC heavier bullets.

The 06 is more than capable on deer to 1,000 yds with the right right, right load and right shooter.

So what is the except able group at 800 with out trying to hard it shoots under 1/2 all day at 100 yards. It's got a costum barrel pillar and glass beded fine tuned by a gunsmith. Thought .4 would be ok for high powered gun or do I need to go back to drawing board

What are your groups shaped like? A circle? An I? A -? Are they horizontal? Vertical?
That gun with the right wind calls should be able to break into the sub moa at 800 range. If its horizontally strung out you need better wind calls. Vertical you need a better ES. If its a wind issue I would look for a better BC. Look at the wind difference between a 215 and your 168. It is a pretty big diff. I would assume.
In general if you wanna shoot well past 500 you need BC way more than FPS. 800 isnt past the effective range of an 06 and in fact is well under it.

I would ditch the load, and possibly the gun. I am pretty anal about my loads and guns and If I can't hold a minimum of .5 MOA out to 500 yards and between .75 and 1 MOA to 1000 I am changing something. I agree with the posted above that a heavier higher B.C. bullet might give you more stability out to the distances you want to be able to shoot.
My rule of thumb is this:
I give my self a 3X penalty for hunting. I take the groups that I can consistantly shoot out of given gun at whatever distances I am shooting and times it by 3. if that keeps me in the vitals then it's a go. for example on a white tail I have to keep it within a 12" vital so I will only shoot out to the distance that I can consistantly keep my groups at 4" or better.
