I am looking into getting a new rifle (building one really) all im keeping off of it is the action and the barrel. anyways what caliber should i look into. ive got me a 7mm rem mag that i just finished,its my hunting gun. i am looking for a caliber with 1000 yard capabilities. i would like to have something bigger than a 308 so it can buck the wind a little better. (ANYTHING BUT A 300 WIN MAG OR ANOTHER 7MM REM MAG!!!) should i go with a 7mm rum? it seems like quite the caliber. thanks for any input.

Given the criteria you have listed then I suggest the 300rum. Load with 215/230 Berger hybrids.

300 RUM is a great round, 338/300 RUM is also an excellet choice, if your not so worried about energy out that far 300 WSM or 7 WSM are also good with less recoil than the ultra mag case.

im not worrie about energy at all... as far as im concerned my 7mm rem mag has enough punch to take an elk at 1000 with a new load i worked up so yeah. i think i change my mind. i might just look into getting another 7mag. thanks for the input guys. lemme know if you have any experience with the 7mm rem mag at 1000 yard benchrest.

if you want 1000 BR go 7wsm. If you want something bigger and different look at the 330 dakota. Shooting 250 scenars or bergers. Lots of fun and recoil is pleasant in a heavier 14-17 lb. rifle with a brake punches through the wind and is tremendously consistent.

the 300 is out for sure as i will list all my relatives that have one, father, uncle, granfather, granmother (shes awesome and tuff haha), other uncle, other grandfather, 2 cousins and my father is looking into buying another.... The 7mm rem mag is back into the arena now... I didnt want one because i just got one like 2 months ago, but for targets at a mile, and game at a graand a hnd alf, with minimal recoil, i find it to pretty much be the cream of the crop... I am looking at something that is BIG(i consider the 270 win small...) and is or was used in the military just for the historical value. I have found that the Navy seals use the 300 win mag and the 7mm rem mag was and to my knowledge still is used by the canadian (i love canada and tons of relatives live there...) Army... i think it was used for a very short while by the us military to. (dont quote me im not positive... but pretty **** sure) and dont get me wrong that 300 will be on my wishlist for a looonng time until i get one, just right now i dont NEED it.

Shooting a mile is a blast.....but its not ez.(Less you can find a 1 mile tube). Out of the things mentioned here a 338 with a 300gr slug at 2800+ is about the only real viable choice till you start talking even bigger. Yes it can be done running the berger 180s and 215/230s or a smk 240 at some silly speeds but those are going to be highly problematic compared to a 338.
An edge, lapua, norma, 338-378,338 rum,excalibur or chey tac will get it done.
Your other option which you mentioned is something slow like a 308 with a bullet that will transition transonic well. Ever held 500 ft of windage on a target?
Any option but the 338 is a treeeeeeeeemendous amount of trouble whereas a 338 at 1 mile is only a treeeeemendous amount of trouble. Your choice.
You seem to want something that will shock and awe everyone, a 338 edge oughta do it and if thats too pedestrian sounding just call it a 338-300 remington ultra mag edge hurling 300gr sierra matchkings out the end at 2850 feet per second. If that doesnt impress the locals show them the actual bullet...if that doesnt impress them nothing will.

Im sure ill wake up one morning with a hangover and a 338 lapua mag in my bed.... But that is pretty much the only way i will own a 338 lapua magnum... To simply have 100 unloaded and unprimed brass, it will set u back about 250 bucks.... with that edge it isnt quite as much... I think ive made up my mind haha thanks for the recomendation on the 338 edge.

You need to put on your thinking cap for a second, I know guys who have 15 reloading on the same 338 Lapua brass and are still on the same 100 pieces of brass for 250 dollars. The 300 RUM brass you'll need will set you back 110 per hundred but you will be replacing it every 3-5 shots so at best you'll need 330 dollars worth of 300 RUM brass sitting around. Now there is the awesome Bertram brass for the 338 Edge but if your worried about Lapua brass braking ya you'll be picking yourself of the floor when you see the price.

That's a fact. Hopefully some good brass will eventually come out for the RUM, but right now it kinda sucks. But oh well... I am having another 300 RUM built.

Wait till you price 500 berger or smk or gawd forbid monometals. Then add in pounds of tumbo or h100 or even worse some VV. Add in hours of bras prep, bullet sorting,charge weighing and load development and wow! My edge is a solid sub .5moa gun I built with a hart barrel on a savage action. People ask me what it cost and I say "$1000 for the gun..$1500 scope...$350 for mounts/rings and about $10k worth of fodder". Extreme LR is EXTREMELY NOT CHEAP. And yes the brass issue between lapua and rum is a wash $$ wise with the advantage going to the lapua if for no other reason than quality.
Dont try to get into 1 mile shooting unless youre ready to spend a bunch of cash. I dont want to discourage anyone but its just not cheap and everything you use has to be top shelf stuff or you are just throwing bullets into the wind. Every shot is at least $2 when you figure in supplies and higher if you add barrel life. LOTTA FUN THO.
