Stripped receiver threads

Hi all. I recently picked up a barely used Savage 10FCP HS Precision .308. The guy I bought it from had a cheap Tasco scope and cheap mounts on it so I pulled everything off to upgrade. When removing the scope base the screws came out stripped. It looks like he went way overboard when tightening them, and it looks like he used red loc-tite. I was able to clean the pieces of screw threads out of the receiver but the receiver threads aren't looking too good. There are still threads left but most of them are rolled over or flattened out a bit. Has anyone tried the oversized tap and screw kit from Brownells? They retap the holes from 6-48 to 0.146-48. Just wondering if I should try these first or just take it to a gunsmith and have them drilled and tapped for 8-40. Either way I'm going to try a 6-48 tap first and see how they clean up. I would recommend having them opened up to 8-40. This is the basis for where your optics are mounted. Having something loose or not fit correctly will greatly effect your accuracy.

Go to 8-40 and be done with trouble.

Also there are sets of bases that have provisions for 8-40 screws (Like Leupold) and two complete
sets of screws included (6-48s and 8-40s that are the right length).

Thanks guys, thats what I was leaning toward. I already have a Badger Ordnance base, I'll just have to open up the holes for the bigger screws
