Long range coyote gun?

Hi, I'm new to the long range shooting/hunting. I live in southern ontario and am looking for a good quality gun at a reasonible price. As far as caliber I would like something that is legal in southern ontario for coyotes but at the top of that power range because there maybe a chance of this gun being used for deer. A friend suggests a .270 but after some research I am leaning more towards a .270 wsm. I have considered buying a lower caliber for just coyotes but with the cost of a quality scope I would prefer to have more of a multi-purpose gun.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I love my 270wsm. But if you are worried about fur damage you would have to shoot some fmj. And may still blow them up. I have shot one coyote with mine at 305 yards with a 130gr Nosler BT at 3300fps. It made. Pretty nasty mess. I love this round for deer. I also shoot 130gr Barnes tsx at 3500fps which smokes what ever it hits.

If your just want to plug one that's way out there and doesn't care what you're doing those two rounds mentioned will do. I've killed them w/ my .270.

There's a bit of skill and fun in calling them in close enough to get a certain shot. Inside of 600 yards you'd be fine with any of the faster .22 cal (i.e. 22-250 or 220 swift).

If you want to be easy on the fir even those will be a challenge on the closer shots you'll get if you get good at calling them in.

It all really depends on what you want out of shooting a yote.

My 270 wsm used to like 135 SMK with H 4831. Easy on the shoulder, fairly fast, and effective at 400 yards or so. I liked this rifle so much that in 8 years of banging away at paper and fur I burned out the throat. ( New barrel time and the jury is still out on that one. )

My new one is a 25 wssm with 87 gr and Varget. Very easy on the shoulder, faster, and still effective even in light breeze.

The 22's get blown around pretty bad where we live and the 6mm's aren't much better.

The wind thing might not mean too much to you, but out here a 10 mph breeze is a calm day.

Try out the .243 win! I love this caliber. Good for long range shooting or close and with all the bullet options nowadays don't let anybody tell you its just a (wee little varmint round).gun)

The 6.5/.264's and 7mm/.284's have a much greater selection of High SD High BS LR bullets than the .277's offer.

My three favorites for Coyotes are the 7mm STW, the .264win and the .260 Rem. With any of the three in a decent platform with good glass you can shoot extremely flat to 600yds (requiring very little doping and dialing if any depending on your scope and experience) with great performance out to 1,000yds.

I love the Remington Sendero's, and Winchester M-70's as my chosen platforms.

You do want a med to heavy varmint or sendero contour on a dedicated LR rig as weight helps with steadiness and of course recoil reduction.

For glass your budget is the only limit, starting with the Vortex Viper PST's, Leupold, VXIII's and Leupold Mark 4's all the way up through IOR Valdada, NF and USO's.

You probably want to go at least 14x mag and for low light conditions the 30mm tubes and 50-56mm OBJ's.

Bshield-coyotes are a small and challenging target. their sure kill zone is the size and shape of 120 once water bottle. even a 200 yard shot is pretty far . i have shot over 250 , longest 496 yards. you do not say budget or if you handload. you do not say what long range is. a remington hvy barrel 243, or a rem 700 with a krieger barrel in the caliber of your choice. a good combo coyote/deer gun would a be a sendero in 264 or 7mm. FEW if any factory rifles have the accuracy to shoot coyotes regularly at long range. Few rifleman have the practice/skill to do it regularly. when you add in the suggestion of a combo gun ............. i have two 6.5-284's with krieger barrrels.

I use 6.5-284 and 260AI. I shot a coyote last year at 1300 with the 6.5. Bullet penciled through but coyote didn't go far. That was really pushing it but out to 800 or so they are both just dynamite.

I missed that he may use it as a deer gun, not sure how. That changes my response. You others have made some good suggestions. I'd probably stick w/ a 6mm (probably a .260, but a .243 would work too). All will work as long as he's not concerned about fur, and I'd image that they've got some good fur up there.

All of this may not matter as he's thus far we haven't heard back from him.

The 243 is plenty good for deer out to a couple hundred yards and yotes way further.gun) I'll let you in on a little secret used by smaller caliber hunter for years, don't go for a double lung shot hit them in the neck. (Deer). Coyotes don't matter. I've lived in Texas most of my life and I'm as use to 500-800 yard shots as most northerners are to 50 yarders but, I just can't see you needing a freakin 7mag. If worse comes to worse bust out the ol' 308

My vote for a perfect long range coyote gun goes to the 25-06, then followed by the 243, 260, and 308. All are easy to load for and have good factory ammo available so you wont break the bank getting to learn your gun on the range, also they can all tap into medium game out to a good distance too. A little on the big side for fur though, if your looking for a fur gun ive used and have seen how good a 204 ruger works for furs, .20 hole in and nothing out yet the coyote is DRT

Good Suggestions. The .260 belongs in there as well. That was the main reason I build my AR-260 and it has proven to be everything I'd hoped for.

Kinda nice it's good for white tails out to 800-900yds as well.gun)
