7600 pump why not?

I'm starting a new project and wanted to share my idea and maybe get some input. I have a Remington 7600 pump in 270 win that shoots decent for a close range rifle. The hunting I do in South Mississippi sometimes requires a quick follow up shoots and a the pump is perfect. It's shoots a 2 inch group at 100 yards and is not considered a long range rifle. I have decided to get a custom barrel and re-stock this rifle. After 2 months of research I have only found 2 smiths that will do it which kind of makes me wonder why there's not more smiths doing work on these rifles? After breaking down my rifle and going through it. The barrel is not even threaded and could possibly be considered a switch barrel rifle like the savage. Seems like someone who would specialize in this rifle could open up a new market for medium to long range rifles with a solid breech and volocities that match a bolt action. Give me your thoughts i'm interested to hear them.

Having said that, and as an owner of a relatively accurate 7400, I can't think of any reason I'd ever do it. For the cost of the conversion you can either buy a bolt action rifle that is already accurate and practice to the point you'll never need a follow up shot, or else limit my shooting to 200 yards so that I don't need a follow up shot. Most "quick follow up shots" tend to be of the "I hope I hit it" variety so I'm not sure 2 inches at 200 yards or 4 inches at 200 yards will make any difference.

I had a 270 Win Rem 7600 several years back, before I switched to the bolt guns. I live in NW Louisiana so thick underbrush is very common. I had my 7600 setup with wide angle see through mounts and a 3X9X40mm Bushnell scope with BDC. My uncles had dogs that were used to run deer. For the quick shots, the iron sights were used and if I had a shot in a cutover or down a pipeline, the BDC was dialed in. After some load development, I had under 1 min accuracy at 100 yards and have had witnesses to the accuracy this rifle is capable of. The Remington Core-Lok in 130 gr were to light for the up close shots so I moved to the 140 gr Nosler BT and also Hollow points but can't think of which brand now.
There are better bonded bullets now to choose from and I would reccommend using them.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up right there.

They're kind of a neat novelty type rifle, & I even own an old 740 or 742 in 30-06, but accurate should never be mentioned in the same sentence.
The triggers are crude at best, & so is the rest of it. But it is fun to shoot if you don't mind 6" of vertical string @ 200yds
I just couldn't bring myself to hunt with that type of "accuracy"

my dads 760 has shot deer at 250 yards and my 7600 at 250 both have moa at 100 yards i firmly believe most accurate centerfire pump available but i doubt i would shoot past that. one we have never tried and two compensation for drop so we dont do unethical shots

Agreed. My dad's we fondly call "Old Grampa" Always a 1 MOA shooter with factory ammo and has never failed to deliver.

To shorten a long story preparing for his first Elk Hunt dad bought a custom 7mm Rem Mag new Zeiss scople yada, yada, yada.

Moment of truth came and the scope was fogged up and there went his chance for an elk.

Five days later, beaten down and depressed they are driving out after loading the horses, gear etc and they spot a phenomenally large 5x5 at around 600yds.

Dad grab's old Grampa out of the back of the truck (where it had been while he was forty miles away on horse back when the new one failed) wearing it's forty year old Weaver K4.

One shot later he was trying to figure out how the hell to load it up with all the gear already loaded.

Using a winch they hung it up on the back of the horse tralier gate and drove the forty plus miles to town.

The horses were absolutely not happy.

One of my varmint rifles is a Remington 7615 Police that has had the adjustable stock removed and replaced with a wood thumbhole stock. The action is the same as a Rem 870 in 20 ga.
I purchased this gun second hand. It is suprising how accurate it is. I can consistantly hit 200+ yard woodchucks

I would caution sinking alot of money into a 7600. You would be better off buying a used rem 700 with that coin.

If I was out of line for my post I apologize. I thought the OP might be interested in something I happen to make. I certainly wasn't looking to compete with the big boys.
