I've had bolt actions for literally as long as I can remember and a few years ago was bitten by the long range shooting bug and have a couple of custom guns for that addition now. But recently I've been bitten by the AR bug and while doing as much reading as I can for the last week or so, I think I am actually more confused than when I started!

So my question to you guys is - with a budget of $800 (+ or -, and minus would be good), what are some of my options for the best quality out there? Thinking buying a complete rifle now would be my best bet until I learn more about them (plus I have my first child on the way in 4 months so my building time will likely be taken up by diaper changing!).

What am I looking for in this first AR? Beats me! Would I like it to shoot .5MOA groups and be accurate out to 600 yards? Sure, but more realistically, something to shoot out to 300-400 yards at targets, rock chucks and sage rats, would be more realistic. I doubt I'll ever be putting 1000 rounds through it in a weekend but would like it to be as dependable as possible.

Is that enough to go on for throwing out some ideas? Thanks for any feedback you can offer and I'll be happy to clarify if you need more info.

You can build one for under $800 but the problems going to be able to find the parts. Upppers and lowers, bolt assemblies or barrels are all back ordered just about everywhere and wiith the recent gun shootings alot of people are buying everything they can just in case they ban the AR. If you want one your best chance will probably be an assembled rifle. Either way you best hustle.gun)

I forgot I saw the Windham AR in Walmart for $799.00 i think, they also had Bushmaster approximately $900.00 and Sig Sauer about the same price. Given the 3 id go with the Bushmaster or the Sig but for $800, Windham doesnt sound to bad.

I just finished my build a little less than $750

TNW Billet Machined upper - $50 (Black Friday Special - what started this build)
Lower - $100
RGUNS nickel boron coated BCG - $160
LPK - $50
Upper parts kit - $35
ACE stock - $65
M4 1:9 twist 16" chrome moly barrel- $120
YHM rifle length FFT - $45
Short gas block - $25
Gas tube - $10

$660

Very good economical build. The lowers and bolt assemblies are what ive found to be on back order.

Any particular preferred vendors (or vendors that might actually have stock on hand)?

Get going now on it. I was at a local shop and as of a week ago they had over 150 AR' on their shelf. Tonight ZERO! 30 round mil spec mags were 9.99 a week ago and now 29.99 at that shop. There is some major gouging of prices and the product is still selling.
