Ordered my 110 FCP HSP 338LM and Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP today!

Well in order to be somewhat good to my wallet, but yet still enjoy some long range hunting (perhaps even dabble in ER), I "pulled the trigger" on my latest rifle build project. I need a little help om some of the final details.

What I purchased so far:
- Savage 110 FCP HS Precision in .338 Lapua Magnum
- Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP with the EBR-1 MOA reticle
- 100 new Lapua brass
- 8 pounds of H1000
- 100 Nosler AccuBond 300 grain bullets
- 1,000 Federal Match Primers GM215M
- already had presses and loading equipment just got dies

What I have left to purchase:
- rings and mount
- bipod and rear monopod
- misc items like an airline case, ADI, top level, etc.

My questions:
1) I'm leaning towards getting the NightForce Ultralite Unimount for rings and mount. My understanding is that the Savage 19481 (110FCP HSP 338LM) comes with a picatinny rail with 20 MOA. If I add the NF Ultralite Unimount (which also has 20 MOA) would the total addition of 40 MOA to my setup be too high? I plan on shooting 200-1,200 yard plus

2) I want to add a good bipod (probably Harris) as well as a rear monopod. But it doesn't look like the HS stock doesn't have swivels. What is the best way to connect the bipod and monopod? What make/models would you recommend? What size bipod 6-9 or more and why?

3) Any other recommendations?

Yes if you stack these it will give you 40 MOA which will be too much in my opinion for the total elevation your scope has. The PST you ordered has a total of 65 moa. So if you install 40 moa of base you not be able to get a 100 yard zero as you will be roughly 8 moa up when the scope is all the way down. My best guess is that would give you a zero in the 600 yard area. Also I don't like to bottom the turrets out so with your scope and a total of 65 moa that limits you to a base with a maximum cant of around 20 or 25 moa.

I would be surprised if the HS stock does not have swivels. I don't think I have seen one that does not. But if it comes with no swivels adding them is not a hard job. They can be purchased on the net pretty easily from someone like Brownells.

For most field use I like the Harris 9~13" swivel bipod. It is the best height for most hunting applications from a prone position. If you are going to shoot from a bench then a 6~9" may be more desirable. But I hardly ever use a bench as I like to practice for field shooting.

Suggestions? Don't forget to add an anti-cant level to your program. If you are dialing shots in you will need one to keep the windage on.

I believe this rifle comes with a EGW base. I do not care for them and I would be for adding a better quality base. If not please at least do a proper installation and epoxy bed the base to the receiver.

Broz really know his stuff, lots of experience there.

I prefer the Atlas bipod over the Harris. I do own both & they are both great, but I do prefer the Atlas.

I can't agree with Broz' comment about EGW, I don't care for them either. Do yourself a favor & call Murphy Precision, Cam is a great guy & his products are TOP quality. He makes pic rails & rings & will even make them out of titanium if you want.

The Unimount will add more MOA than the PST will handle & if you're only shooting to 1200-ish, 40 moa of cant is really not necessary. I like the idea of the rear monopod but I don't have enought experience to comment about them, most of us use the good ole' bag.

You most definitely DO need an ACD, I have been using FlatLine Ops exclusively now & have no intention of using anything else in the future, they're THAT good. I'm pretty sure Len sells them here at the LRH Store, but the website offers more info.

Thanks for advice. I called Savage today and learned that they used the standard EGW rail which is 6061 crap. I called EGW to find out why Savage didn't get the better HD rail that EGW makes and they said EGW said Savage wouldn't spend the extra$$

Needless to say I'm taking off the factory rail when it comes in and using the EGW HD rail for the long action Savage (part #80332). These are made from 7075-T6 and the only thing you have to do yo use on the 110 FCP HSP is to get it in 8-40 screws (standard is the smaller 6). Found them on Swfa for under $60. They will have to do, as my build is almost out of money. Check out the HD's. I hope they work out for me

I went with the EGW HD 0.850 rings (part #60110)which are also with the 7075-T6 machined as a matched pair. They are normally $130 and I found them for about $90 on Optics planet and couldn't pass them up. Starting to run out of money so have to compromise a little. EGW HD Tactical Aluminum Rings .850" Ring Height: Evolution Gun Works Inc.

I verified with Vortex, Savage and EGW that this combination would clear the barrel, allow for comfort cheek rest/eye lineup and have just enough for Butler Creek flip ups

I stayed with just the 20 MOA on the rail. You were also right about the sling swivel mounts
They don't come in an H&S Precision stock so I will be adding them to accept the bipods, monopods and sling (yes I will be hunting with this setup and am watching the weight).

I saw your posts after I had already called the manufacturers. But to be honest those stainless steel and Titanium mounts and rings sounded awesome, I just can't afford them. I probably spent too much on my reloading capability for the. 338 Alpha magnums and am down to my last chunks of money for this build.

I have the same rifle as you and ours has two swivel studs in the forend and 1 near the butt pad.

Riley are you sure? Sounds like you have the 111 LRH in 338 LM which does have them exactly as you say. I called Savage directly yesterday afternoon and they said that the H&S Precision stock on the 110 FCP does not have any.

Does yours have the AccuStock with adjustable cheek rest, those do have 2 front posts and 1 rear post. They are standard on the 111LRH. It is possible that you have a custom 110 FCP with the AccuStock, but 99 plus percent of the 110 FCP's should have the H&S Precision stock without any swivel posts.
The other sign to look for is that the 110 FCP 338LM has a heavier fluted barrel and comes with a 20 MOA pica tinny rail.

I do all my reading and posting on my smartphone (RAZR MAXX HD), so there will be some typos from time to time including where it changes a word like Lapua to Alpha
So please excuse the occasional typo of obviously wrong replacements...

Ours has the HSP stock. No adjustable cheek piece and the wide forend.

I was wondering what an Alpha mag was No harm no foul. I hope the EGW stuff treats you well. Be aware, I have talked to more than one gent who had alloy rings slip with a Large Caliber Magnum. They weren't EGW's, but alloy is alloy. Worst case scenario, you will most likely have to lap them... oh well. I would heed broz' advice & bed that base as well.

I can't wait to start putting her through the process and working up the perfect load.

I just started using Shooter this week on my iphone and really like it. It is user friendly and has alot of nice features including numerous settings to get the data as close to dead on as possible. I agree with earlier post about not being crazy about the Harris bipod.

Interesting. Mine don't (have swivel studs) but then I bought mine before the 338 'gotta have one' craze hit.....
